Drake Maye and the New England Patriots just lost the Super Bowl to the Seattle Seahawks in an underwhelming performance, a bitter end for an otherwise unprecedented season. Now that it’s over, the Patriots have to start getting ready for next season. Although optimism is high surrounding the team, how do their prospects actually look?
Roster Overview
All things considered, the Patriots are in a favorable roster position. They have a few notable free agents, including linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson, who had a career year with seven and a half sacks, and safety Jaylinn Hawkins, who also had a career year with four interceptions. The Patriots should be able to bring back both players and pursue free agents if they choose, as they are projected to have 42 million dollars in cap space over to Over The Cap. The Patriots may also look to use this cap flexibility to get ahead on extending their young talent, like Christian Gonzalez, who will be in for a big payday.
Offensive Needs
Although the Patriots won the AFC, they are still not a perfect team, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The offensive line is a large point of contention among fans, understandably so, considering Drake Maye was the most sacked quarterback in the regular season. Some talent on the line will naturally improve, like rookie left tackle Will Campbell, who played pretty well before his knee injury. Another rookie who started, Jared Wilson, may see some competition going into next season, given his lackluster performance. The rest of the line is unlikely to change since all of the players are on large contracts and performed fairly well.
The larger issue is that Drake Maye holds onto the ball too long and struggles to avoid pressure. Maye has also struggled to protect the ball, even going back to college. Fumbling the ball fifteen times and losing seven throughout the 2025 regular and postseason. Although the offensive line can play better, Drake Maye also needs to improve on his ability to avoid pressure and get the ball out quickly to take his play to the next level.
The Patriots also lack offensive playmakers, although guys like Stefon Diggs, Keyshon Boutte, Hunter Henry, and DeMario Douglas are solid pass catchers; none of them are true difference makers. Although there is young talent on the roster that could develop further, like wide receiver Kyle Williams and runningback Trevyon Henderson, the Patriots still need an elite receiving talent to bring their offense from good to great.
End Of Patriots Rant
Although the Patriots can make it back to the Super Bowl, history is against them. Out of all the second-year quarterbacks to ever lose a Super Bowl, none have made another, including many high-end talents like Dan Marino, Joe Burrow, and Brock Purdy. If the Patriots have proven anything as an organization, however, it’s that they know how to win.
