The New York Yankees boast a quality farm system, featuring top prospects. Some of these prospects may reach the big league within a year or two, while others may be ready sooner than projected.
George Lombard Jr., the 2023 first-round pick from the New York Yankees’ organization, looks great so far in High-A Hudson Valley.
Lombard Jr. was born on June 2, 2005, in Miami, Florida, and was raised in the Sunshine State until his high school graduation.
The Florida native played his high school ball for Gulliver Prep School in Pincrest, Florida. At Gulliver Prep, Lombard Jr. had already shown signs that he possessed both MLB speed and power hitting.
The 2023 New York Yankees’ first-round pick ran the sixty-yard dash in 6.53 seconds, and his record exit velocity off the bat was 97 mph.
After high school, Lombard Jr. originally planned to commit to Vanderbilt University and play college ball, but instead, took the Derek Jeter and A-Rod path.
He decided to de-commit from college and play professionally right out of high school. In his pro debut in 2023, Lombard Jr. made an immediate impression.
Playing for two different teams in the club’s farm system, the youngster played in 13 combined games and recorded 14 hits in 45 at-bats. He also scored nine runs and drove in six RBIs.
Lombard Jr. took his play up a notch in 2024. The prospect began his season with the Hudson Valley Renegades in High-A. He played in 29 games, scoring 10 runs and driving in eight RBIs in 115 at-bats.
While showing promise in a small sample size, Lombard Jr. was sent back down to the Tampa Yankees in Low-A, where he was able to produce more and earn more at-bats.
The prospect finally hit his first professional home run down there out of a total of five all season. He also recorded 72 hits with 37 RBIs and 30 stolen bases, all in 81 games played in 310 at-bats.
By sending him back down from High-A to Low-A in 2024, he started 2025 off in High-A with the Hudson Valley Renegades.
In the 2025 season, Lombard Jr. started the season right back up with High-A Hudson Valley Renegades and looked even better than projected.
In his first fifteen contests, Lombard Jr. had recorded 14 hits and had scored 12 runs in his first 49 at-bats. He also had seven RBIs and just recorded his first home run at the High-A Level, and had nine stolen bases.
Currently, he is finally tapping into his full potential, demonstrating that he can run and play like a player with 6.53 sixty-yard dash speed by stealing numerous times.
He’s also showcasing his power with that 100 mph exit velocity for a prospect itching closer to the big leagues than expected.
As for the infielder’s defensive play, Lombard Jr. has the talent to play third base, shortstop, or second base.
His preferred position is shortstop, but the skilled athlete carries an average fielding percentage in the .900s in any one of those positions.
Lombard Jr. can maneuver with speed to cover the ground, while his fiery arm can throw out a player in an instant.
While Lombard Jr. was initially projected to make his MLB debut in 2027, scouts are projecting that he could make it in 2026. If he keeps working hard and keeps up his stats, he could see Triple-A by the midway or near the end of 2025.
The bottom line is that one shouldn’t always rely on a prospect’s projection to make the big leagues, as they are developing faster through the minor leagues nowadays.
Some, like Pirates Pitcher, Paul Skenes, make it earlier than usual, and in rare cases, start in an All-Star game as a rookie.
