Pete Alonso has gotten off to a torrid start to the season. He has been the Mets’ best hitter to start the season and was named the National League Player of the Month for April. With how well Pete has started and the type of season he’s on pace for, they need to re-sign him before the end of the season.

The New York Mets Must Sign Pete To A Contract Extension Before The End Of The Season

So far this season, Alonso is hitting close to .350. He has also crushed eight homers and is leading the National League in RBIs with 30. Before this season began, Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million deal with the Mets with an opt-out after this season. If he continues on the run he is on, he will most likely opt out for an even bigger deal in the offseason. They can talk to him during the season to sort out a contract extension to his liking, but they’ll have to do it fast.

The Mets Can Not Afford To Lose A Bat Like Pete’s This Offseason

The Mets need to do whatever they can to keep Pete. Even just looking at his career with them, Alonso has been a four-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year, and has a chance this season to break the Mets All-Time Home Run record. He has helped them make the playoffs twice in his career as well. It would be ideal for Steve Cohen and company to try and find the right number to keep Pete in Queens for his career.

The Mets Should Want Alonso On The Mets For The Rest Of His Career

Alonso is the type of player the Mets need in that lineup for the next five or more years. He has already shown he can hit for power, having three seasons with 40 or more home runs. He can be a decent average hitter, having a lifetime .252 average. Alonso can also play solid defense in the field. They just added Juan Soto this offseason to bolster their lineup, and letting Alonso walk would take away from how deep of a lineup they have.

Pete Alonso is one of the best hitters in the MLB to start the season. Yes, it has only been a month so far, but for the Mets to let someone like him walk to another team this offseason would make no sense. If they are trying to have a deep and scary lineup for years to come and be a contender, Alonso has to be re-signed before he opts out this offseason. They now have an important issue ahead, which is how much they are willing to give Pete to keep him in Queens.
