The Astros’ top-ten pitching staff proves the difference, as the Yankees continue one of the biggest fall-offs in MLB. After a three-game sweep from the Marlins, New York entered this game fresh off a series loss to the Rangers. They fell from first in the AL East to third, and on the Wild Card Bubble. Houston finds itself 1.5 games up on the Mariners for first in the AL West.
Winning just one of their last eight series, the Tigers remain atop the AL Central, largely in part to their hot start this year, and being the only team in the division with a positive run differential helps too. The pitching staff has been a strength this season, but slipped to 27th in ERA over the last 30 days. The Tigers’ roar of early dominance is turning into the loudest meow in a weak division.
The Guardians are defying the odds, sneaking into the Wild Card picture after being sellers at the MLB Trade Deadline. Enjoying the woes of the Yankees, Cleveland finds itself just half a game back for the final AL spot. Since July 7, 2025, they have gained 9.5 games on the Tigers. The last 30 days, their pitching staff has been delivering the heat, with the fourth-best ERA. The bats are right behind that, finishing top ten in OPS over the same period.
Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh continues to be the most talented catcher in the league, and added to it in a big way. His three-run homer scored all 3 RBI and the winning run. The Mariners are in a pretty comfortable spot, now closer to the Astros atop the AL West than losing their Wild Card spot. Top ten in team ERA and slugging, they can win in a number of ways. The Mariners look to be a worthy dark-horse bet.
After being written off by many earlier in the season, the Red Sox prove all predictors fraudulent, as Boston has moved above the Yankees for second in the AL East by 3.5 games. They are the only team above .500 over the last ten games in the AL East, at 8-2, and have the best run differential in the division. Showing off their top ten pitching staff, starting pitcher Walker Buehler gives an example of how, with zero earned runs and only two walks, over six important innings.
The Dodgers delivered Blue Jays’ fans the harsh difference of an unexpected season from the bats, and a true money-spending titan of MLB. Toronto hasn’t delivered the best pitching, ranking 21st in season OPS, and is banking on some injured veterans to find their way back to old form. It’s been enough for their bats, whose .883 OPS is tops in MLB. They’d best continue the efficiency, as the Red Sox are just three games in the rearview mirror.
With the Mariners and Red Sox having a few games of cushion, the final AL spot would be down to the Yankees, Guardians, and Rangers, fighting for the sole entry. The American League also brings teams with unexpected results. The Blue Jays’ bats got hot at the right time, and don’t gloss over the elite season from Raleigh. Both the Yankees’ fall and the Red Sox’s rise are also unexpected from early-season results.
