Mark Stoops has landed another commit. New Mexico State Seth McGowan committed to the Cats on Sunday afternoon.

Much Needed Experience

Kentucky has focused on gaining experience through the transfer portal this offseason, and they’ve added another experienced running back in Seth McGowan. The three-star transfer is ranked as the portal’s 427th best player and the 25th best running back. McGowan originally signed with Oklahoma as a four-star prospect in the Sooners’ 2020 recruiting class.

He also had a two-year absence from football as well. On May 7, 2021, He was charged with robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. He later received one year probation and was dismissed from Oklahoma.

In 2023, McGowan spent his season at Butler Community College and ultimately moved to New Mexico State in 2024, where he received a second chance at his career at the D1 level.

Running Back Room Full of Explosive Guys

With the addition of McGowan, Kentucky’s running back room is now filled with experience. Jamarion Wilcox, Jason Patterson, and Nebraska transfer Dante Dowdell are all part of the mix. As of now, I’d give the edge to Jason Patterson, but the competition is just beginning.

We can expect to see new players emerge throughout the summer, making this an intriguing group to watch as the countdown to the season continues.

Adding McGowan will also give the Wildcats that change of pace back, along with Dowdell, and plenty of potential roaming free in the backfield.

Good on Mark Stoops giving McGowan a chance to showcase his talents in the SEC.

Success At New Mexico State

In his time at New Mexico State Seth McGowan showcased his talent, He rushed for 823 yards at a clip of 5.4 yards per carry, while adding 23 receptions for 277 yards and three touchdowns through the air as, well.

His dual-threat ability gives the Kentucky staff a chance to show off his talents in the SEC. He will also be playing with former teammate Shiayzh Pete, who is now at Kentucky, and will be battling for one of the top spots on the offensive line.

From his legal troubles to the football field, he’s now being given an opportunity to change all the narratives and land on his feet with Kentucky and into a lineup that will feature him at times, especially on 3rd down situations and passing downs.

End Of My Kentucky Football Rant

New Mexico State

As Kentucky prepares for the summer and the hot, long months leading up to football season, they are focused on building a culture-fit unit and a talented running back room.

What happens this season will depend on the staff’s ability to get this team back to winning football and meeting Kentucky’s “Standards,” which is all about running the football.

Always known for their running style, this group fits that bill. Recently, there has been a noticeable drop-off in performance in some years, but many names have come through this program and helped change the culture, including Benny Snell, Ray Davis, Chris Rodriguez Jr., and many more.

Last season’s 4-8 record is in the back of everyone’s minds, including the fans and especially Mark Stoops. The only way to change that narrative is to build a team full of winners—guys who believe they can take Kentucky back to a bowl game and return to playing winning football.

Stoops has actively worked the transfer portal, bringing in new talent to replace much of what was lost. If the contributions we’re seeing today pay off this fall, I believe we’ll see better results moving forward.
