The New England Patriots have been extremely active in free agency, and have made significant improvements in their roster. There are still some glaring holes, and as the NFL Draft approaches, there are fewer players they can fill those holes with. Until Tee Higgins officially signs an extension with the Cincinnati Bengals, the pipe dream of acquiring him is still alive. The market is completely dried up in terms of left tackle, but there is still at least one great option available at edge rusher.
It is highly unlikely that Travon Walker will finish out his rookie contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former first-overall pick has improved each year and still has a ways to go before reaching his potential. Jacksonville may not have a team that can legitimately compete for a title, and it’s possible they may not want to invest (or have the means to invest) in a top-flight edge rusher. Their loss could be New England’s gain.
Under Bill Belichick, the Patriots assembled and maintained a dynasty built around defense. No matter how good the offense was, and regardless of the team having the greatest quarterback in league history, the defensive side of the ball was always given priority. Even the 2007 squad, which shattered offensive records en route to a 16-0 regular season, boasted the fourth-best scoring defense in the NFL. Now Mike Vrabel is at the helm, and hoping to replicate the success the team had under his head coach.
The other reason the Patriots could be willing to make a deal is the value. New England has always had an eye for a bargain, and Walker is exactly that. He’s racked up 20.5 sacks and 44 quarterback hits over the last two seasons, and it wouldn’t cost much to acquire him. ESPN’s Ben Solak suggested the Detroit Lions could get Walker for two fourth-round picks. According to Jimmy Johnson’s Draft Pick Value Chart, those two picks would be worth 220 points.
The Patriots have the 69th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft (245 point value) and the 77th pick thanks to the Atlanta Falcons (205 points). This means that the Patriots could acquire Walker from the Jaguars for the 69th pick, and still have another pick in the round. New England’s scoring defense was ranked 22nd in the league in 2024, and that’s due in large part to nobody on the team having more than 5 sacks.
The addition of Walker, along with the signing of Milton Williams, and the continued development of Keion White could put an enormous amount of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This would lead to bad throws into a secondary policed by Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis, Kyle Duggar, and Jabrill Peppers. The defense could quickly return to their glory days, putting less pressure on Drake Maye to win games, and alleviating the need to overpay for a top-flight wide receiver.
