Victor Wembanyama’s season-ending injury has raised concerns, but many still hope for his full recovery.
The 7-foot marvel from Paris, France, Victor Wembanyama has unexpectedly been sidelined for the remainder of this NBA season. Although fans might feel disappointed about his absence, it’s important to remember that this situation offers Wembanyama the opportunity to return to the court in the future.
Wembanyama, a powerhouse center, was on track to make the 2024-2025 NBA season his own. According to ESPN,
He was averaging impressive stats: 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game—figures that positioned him as a contender for the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award.
As sources report, he will likely be unable to claim this accolade because of the games he will miss due to his injury.
Standing at an impressive 7 feet 3 inches, Wembanyama ‘s remarkable height is just an added advantage to his exceptional skills, which led to him being the San Antonio Spurs’ first-round draft pick in 2023. Since assuming his role as center, he has demonstrated what extraordinary talent looks like on the court, earning him the Rookie of the Year title unanimously. He has been only the sixth to have this distinction.
On February 20, he was sidelined because of a thrombosis.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a serious condition that can be life-threatening. It occurs when a blood clot forms, usually in the deep veins of the lower limbs. If this clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, the consequences can be dire. Therefore, the discovery of Wembanyama’s condition was particularly alarming.
Although DVT often occurs in the lower limbs, it can also develop in the upper body. According to Sporting News,
Some athletes experience DVT, in their upper extremities. This is referred to as effort thrombosis or Paget-Schroetter Syndrome. For the Spurs Center, the clot was found in his shoulder.
Sporting News is reporting that the Spurs are not overly concerned about the player’s long-term prognosis. He appears to be out of immediate danger. He, however, is not entirely in the clear.
“The treatment of an athlete with an upper extremity DVT is more complex than that of a lower extremity because there is often an underlying cause that requires treatment.”
This is the situation Wenyabama finds himself in.
The exact cause of the clot remains unclear, but speculation suggests it might relate to excessive travel, which can be particularly challenging for those of exceptional height. Cramped conditions during extensive travel, especially via airplane, can hinder proper circulation, thereby increasing the risk of developing a clot. Other theories have also been proposed, but nothing has been definitively identified.
For now, there is a sense of relief, as it is believed the condition was caught in time, allowing for hopeful recovery. Unlike other athletes for whom such a condition marked the end of their careers, there is optimism for Wembanyama. Yahoo Sports notes the successful healing journey of other NBA stars, such as Brandon Ingram and Ausar, who have recovered and returned to play effectively. This is the hope for Wembanyama.
Despite losing a player, the Spurs seem to have prepared a backup plan. As ESPN observes, the team is likely to cover the center position through a mix of Sandro Mamukelashvili, Jeremy Sochan, and Charles Bassey (knee), and there’s also the possibility they might acquire a free-agent center to fill the gap.
While fans may feel a bit discouraged today, a sense of optimism prevails. The center has a significant journey ahead before returning to the game, requiring thorough medical evaluation. As Sporting News points out, he will need to take blood thinners to address the blood clot. Even in the absence of a known cause, there’s still an increased risk of another DVT, necessitating ongoing vigilance for symptoms in the future. For now, we hold on to hope for a positive outcome.
