The NBA free agency period is the most exciting part of the offseason. This article takes a look at some of the best fits for each Eastern Conference team. The projected cap space for each team is based on results from Spotrac. One note, each player can only be projected to one team between this Eastern Conference set and the Western Conference best fits edition.

Atlanta Hawks: Kelly Oubre Jr.

Cap space available: Potential $32.9 million

The Atlanta Hawks have a very well-balanced roster, so adding depth all around would be the best use of this cap space in NBA free agency. Kelly Oubre Jr. makes a ton of sense, giving them another athletic wing to utilize.

Boston Celtics: Kristaps Porzingis

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

Kristaps Porzingis will be a very interesting story to watch as NBA Free Agency unfolds. His limited availability could make a reunion with the Boston Celtics more realistic than it seems.

Brooklyn Nets: Jonathan Kuminga

Cap space available: $46.9 million

The Brooklyn Nets are not close to contending, so adding young players with upside should be the way to go in NBA free agency. Jonathan Kuminga is exactly the type of swing they should be trying to take.

Charlotte Hornets: Ayo Dosunmu

NBA free agency
May 8, 2026; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves guard Ayo Dosunmu (13) against the San Antonio Spurs in the first half during game three of the second round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Target Center. Mandatory Credit: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

Ayo Dosunmu is a great fit in NBA Free Agency for the Charlotte Hornets. He can slide into the starting lineup when Lamelo Ball is injured and control the bench unit when everyone’s healthy. His ability on the defensive side of the ball makes a versatile option late game in Charlotte.

Chicago Bulls: Tari Eason

NBA free agency
May 1, 2026; Houston, Texas, USA; Houston Rockets forward Tari Eason (17) reacts after a made basket against the Los Angeles Lakers during the third quarter of game six of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Toyota Center. Mandatory Credit: Erik Williams-Imagn Images

Cap space available: $63.5 million

The Chicago Bulls and Tari Eason make so much sense during the 2026 NBA Free Agency period. Bryson Graham has continuously mentioned S.L.A.P (size, length, athleticism, physicality) as the way he wants to build this roster. Going after restricted free agents is the likely way Chicago opts to use their cap space.

Cleveland Cavaliers: Simone Fontecchio

NBA free agency

Cap space available: Taxpayer MLE ($6.1 million)

The Cleveland Cavaliers do not have much flexibility in this year’s NBA free agency period, so expect them to add depth on minimum contracts. Simone Fontecchio adds a stretch four off the bench in Cleveland.

Detroit Pistons: Jalen Duren

NBA free agency

Cap space available: Potential $27.9 million

Jalen Duren was not the same player in the playoffs, but he is still an integral piece of the future for the Detroit Pistons. He may have cost himself some good money, but he should definitely stay with the team that’s raised him when NBA free agency opens.

Indiana Pacers: Tim Hardaway Jr.

NBA free agency

Cap space available: Taxpayer MLE ($6.1 million)

Tim Hardaway Jr. and the Indiana Pacers are one of the best fits in this year’s NBA Free Agency. A scoring guard off the bench is the biggest hole on the roster, and this would fill that perfectly as they look to get back into contention.

Miami Heat: Norman Powell

NBA free agency
Mar 25, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Miami Heat guard Norman Powell (24) looks to shoot in the first quarter against the Cleveland Cavaliers at Rocket Arena. Mandatory Credit: David Richard-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

The Miami Heat should make re-signing Norman Powell priority number one during NBA Free Agency. The loss would be way larger than anyone else who could fill his role.

Milwaukee Bucks: Quentin Grimes

NBA free agency
Mar 25, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Philadelphia 76ers guard Quentin Grimes (5) dribbles the ball against the Chicago Bulls during the second quarter at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

The Milwaukee Bucks have an important offseason with the uncertainty surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo. In the scenario, he remains in Milwaukee, adding a guard with Quentin Grimes’ defensive and scoring abilities would add needed youth and versatility to their roster.

New York Knicks: Mitchell Robinson

NBA free agency

Cap space available: Taxpayer MLE ($6.1 million)

Mitchell Robinson has been through it all with the New York Knicks. It would be strange seeing him land anywhere else; re-signing him should be the first thing they do when NBA Free Agency opens.

Orlando Magic: Bones Hyland

NBA free agency
Apr 30, 2026; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Timberwolves guard Bones Hyland (8) celebrates making a shot against the Denver Nuggets in the first half during game six of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Target Center. Mandatory Credit: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Taxpayer MLE ($6.1 million)

The Orlando Magic are in a tough spot, with limited cap space and a need for improvement. Adding an element of scoring during NBA free agency should be their main priority, and Bones Hyland gives them just that.

Philadelphia 76ers: John Collins

NBA free agency
Apr 5, 2026; Sacramento, California, USA; LA Clippers forward John Collins (20) follows through after shooting a three-point basket against the Sacramento Kings during the third quarter at Golden 1 Center. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

John Collins would be a dream for the Philadelphia 76ers. A true PF next to Joel Embiid who can rebound and shoot the occasional three-point shot. Collins replacing Oubre would be exactly what they need. The NBA free agency period will be crucial for Philadelphia.

Toronto Raptors: Kevin Porter Jr.

NBA free agency
Mar 14, 2026; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Milwaukee Bucks guard Kevin Porter Jr. (7) before a game against the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

Kevin Porter Jr. wouldn’t cost the Toronto Raptors their exception, but he would still be a great fit. A pure offensive guard is what they were missing in the playoffs with Immanuel Quickley out. Prioritizing guard depth should be the move in Toronto.

Washington Wizards: Lu Dort

NBA free agency
Apr 27, 2026; Phoenix, Arizona, USA; Oklahoma City Thunder guard Luguentz Dort (5) against the Phoenix Suns during game four of the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs at Mortgage Matchup Center. Mandatory Credit: Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Cap space available: Non-taxpayer MLE ($15.1 million)

The Washington Wizards appear to be heading towards the playoffs next year with the additions of Trae Young, Anthony Davis, and the number one overall pick. Lu Dort would bring defense to help hide Trae Young on that side of the ball.

End Of My NBA Rant

The NBA Free Agency period will become more predictable as the offseason progresses. With that being said, it’s never too early to look at cap space and potential fits for NBA Free Agency.
