Mykhailo Mudryk returns to Chelsea after successfully overturning his doping ban, giving Xabi Alonso an unexpected attacking option just weeks before the new Premier League season begins.

The FA said the settlement followed updated WADA reporting thresholds. Under the revised limits, Mudryk’s sample would not have been reported if it had been collected today.
The governing body added that no anti-doping rule violation would have resulted.
Mudryk still accepted he had committed the violation as part of the settlement, with his effective ban reduced to time already served — roughly 20 months.

Alonso’s football is built on transitions — quick vertical attacks, pace in behind defenses, aggressive pressing. Mudryk’s game was always built around exactly that kind of directness.
At Bayer Leverkusen, Alonso got enormous production from left wing-back Alejandro Grimaldo, who supplied width, crosses, and set-piece delivery from an advanced left-sided role inside a back-three system.
A player with Mudryk’s raw pace could plausibly fill a similar function at Chelsea, even without Grimaldo’s specific passing profile. The more conventional path is a straightforward left-wing role in a back-four shape, competing directly with Chelsea’s existing options there.
Mudryk’s most realistic route into the strongest team is as an impact substitute or a rotation option against opponents who sit deep and invite direct running in behind.

Rather than sending Mudryk straight into competitive football, Chelsea appear focused on rebuilding his match sharpness gradually
Mudryk’s first minutes could come in the pre-season friendly against Juventus before any decision is made about his involvement in Premier League or other competitive fixtures.
Alonso has also made it clear that no decision has been taken on the winger’s longer-term role at the club, with his fitness and reintegration remaining the priority
Mudryk’s return has real financial relevance beyond the pitch.
Under profit and sustainability rules, Mudurk’s transfer fee was already amortized against Chelsea’s books back in 2023 — his return to fitness adds no new charge, unlike signing a fresh left-sided attacker would.
If Alonso concludes Mudryk gives him workable depth on the left, Chelsea may not need to spend further in that position.
