Earlier this week, the New York Knicks officially introduced Mike Brown as their new Head Coach for the 2025-2026 season. Brown, who recently served as Head Coach of the Sacramento Kings, comes to the Knicks as the franchise faces a fork in the road.
The Knicks are coming off another 50-plus win season, where the team reached the Eastern Conference Finals, ultimately losing to the Indiana Pacers. Less than a week later, the team relieved Tom Thibodeau from his Head Coaching duties.
Leon Rose, President of Basketball Operations for the Knicks, wanted to interview numerous current Head Coaches in the league, such as Jason Kidd and Ime Udoka, to name a few. The franchise’s search was even linked to Dawn Staley, the heralded Head Coach of the University of South Carolina Women’s basketball team.
Rose and Knicks owner Jim Dolan eventually settled on Mike Brown, a coach within the league for 28 years, where he began as an assistant for the Washington Wizards in 1997.
Mike Brown would most likely be remembered by NBA fans as the former Head Coach of the 2007 Cleveland Cavaliers, the first team led to the NBA Finals led by LeBron James. Brown has been an Assistant Coach on four Championship teams with the San Antonio Spurs in 2003 and the Golden State Warriors in 2017, 2018, and 2022.
In his introductory press conference, Brown stated that he wanted to integrate his offensive and defensive philosophies with the skills and talents of the current roster, most notably led by point guard and team captain Jalen Brunson.

What Are The Expectations For Mike Brown And The Knicks?
The expectations for the New York Knicks haven’t been this high since the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, when the franchise was coming off an NBA Finals appearance.
The Eastern Conference is presumed to be weaker going into next season than its Western counterpart, with key Achilles injuries to Boston Celtics guard Jayson Tatum and Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Halliburton. Joel Embiid, the center of the Philadelphia 76ers, will be coming back this upcoming season from injury as well.
During the NBA’s free agency period, the Knicks have picked up Jordan Clarkson to back up Brunson, as well as Guerschon Yabusille, who was a rotational bench player on the 76ers.
End Of My Mike Brown And Knicks Rant
The Knicks have the second best odds to win the NBA Championship next year. It may seem like a tall task after firing a former Coach of the Year, but Brown has won the award himself, too. If he’s anything different from his predecessor, he’ll test out different rotations during the year and run scrimmages in hopes of capturing the team’s first championship since 1973.
