Mexico vs. Ecuador 2026 World Cup preview – The FIFA World Cup 2026 Group Stage is over, and it’s put up or shut up in the Round of 32. This is a story of two soccer nations, looking to carry on their own fairy tale, but only one will see their dreams come to fruition.
It’d be difficult to find many other teams in this FIFA World Cup as hot as Mexico. They crushed all of their foes in Group A: South Africa, South Korea, and Czechia. Not only have they won all three games, but they also haven’t allowed a goal.
This Mexican team is looking for an historic moment, looking to win their first Knockout Stage match in 40 years. The offense has shown depth, with four guys netting a marker, led by forward Julián Quiñones and his two. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel also deserves credit for stopping all five shots on target throughout the Group Stage. Including friendlies, this team hasn’t lost a game since January and feels strong in the Round of 32.
After going scoreless against Côte d’Ivoire and Curaçao, Ecuador shocked the world with a monumental upset 2-1 victory over Group E winner Germany. Midfielder Nilson Angulo and forward Gonzalo Plata have netted those two goals so far. Goaltender Hernán Galíndez has also put up a valiant effort, stopping six of eight shots on goal.
It’ll take a miracle for Ecuador to grind past Mexico, but if forced, what better team to select for such a thing? The hometown fans in Mexico City Stadium will be raucous, and on paper, they’re highly outmanned. The Mexicans are understandably a large betting favorite, but that’s why they play the games.
