Well, the New York Mets have made two trades so far, acquiring relievers Gregory Soto and Tyler Rogers. The trade saw them giving up what seemed like a big haul, with Jose Butto, Drew Gilbert, and Blade Tidwell all going to the San Francisco Giants. Early on, it seems as if Mets fans can’t agree on whether this was an overpay or not for Rogers. It’s a simple answer, but it’s not.

Tyler Rogers Is A Huge Addition For The Mets’ Bullpen

The 34-year-old reliever has been great this year, posting a 1.80 ERA in 53 innings with a 4-3 record. Rogers will help bolster this bullpen and can be a key guy in getting the Mets to Diaz to close out some huge games. The only issue is that he may be a rental, considering he is a free agent after this season. If they can get Rogers to re-sign after this year, it could be a big trade that helps them in the next few years with their bullpen.

The Mets Were Not Wrong In Giving Up Gilbert

Take a look at who the Mets traded away in the Rogers trade, starting with Drew Gilbert. Gilbert, who is now 24 years old, was the #12-ranked prospect in their farm system. While he has been hot lately, hitting .319 with 5 homers and 14 RBIs over his last 28 days, the Mets seem content on getting rid of him. They have a younger potential star they could use in centerfield in Carson Benge. Gilbert has yet to make his MLB debut. They have Benge, whom they probably see as their future centerfielder, over a guy like Gilbert, leading to him being the odd man out and getting moved.

Tidwell And Butto Were Expendable Players For The Mets

Jose Butto had one solid season in his tenure with this team in 2024, where he posted a 7-3 record with a 2.55 ERA in 74 innings in relief. While he was solid that year, he was also having a down year this season, posting a 3.64 ERA in 47 innings in relief. In his last 3 appearances, Butto has had an 18.90 ERA in 3.1 innings. With Tidwell, the Mets saw how he was in 4 appearances in the MLB this year, posting a 1-1 record with a 9 ERA in 15 innings. These two were expendable as they have other options like McLean, Sproat, and Tong who can take their spots in the future.

End Of My Mets Rant

At the end of the day, this trade can be a huge win for the Mets if Tyler Rogers ends up re-signing with them in the offseason. The Mets are also trying to win now, and one of their holes was the bullpen, in which Rogers helps them a lot in this case. It doesn’t feel like an overpay considering what other players await the future, as mentioned with Sproat, McLean, Tong, and Benge, to name a few. The Mets will be okay giving up these guys and still have a ton of solid prospects for the future.
