Liverpool won’t come out as losers after all in the Real Madrid’s Trent Alexander-Arnold deal. Instead of joining the Spanish side for free, Madrid have agreed to pay the English side £10m.
Why Did Real Madrid Pay Liverpool?
Real Madrid could have waited for Alexander-Arnold’s contract to end, but they didn’t want to wait until 30 June. According to The Guardian, this prompted Madrid to seek a solution so that the full-back could join them for the Club World Cup. It is set to start on June 14. With this deal, Alexander-Arnold is leaving 29 days earlier than the end of his contract.
The publication has also reported that at first, Real Madrid offered to pay the club £850,000 to sign the English international early. This offer was rejected, which is quite understandable. It is so low that it would have been equal to letting him go for free
Liverpool Won Something
With this deal, Liverpool has a small win to celebrate. In addition to the one-off €10m fee, Real Madrid will also cover their new player’s wages for the month of June. This means that Liverpool no longer has to worry about this.
This win, however, is bitter. They are losing one of their best players, who has been with them for over a decade. It’s not an easy goodbye. Not to mention that they could have won £20m if they had accepted Madrid’s initial offer back in December. It’s too late to cry over spilled milk.
Another good side is that Liverpool already has a replacement in mind. They are currently after Bayer Leverkusen’s right-back Jeremie Frimpong. A £30 million deal is close to being finalized.
New Details About Alexander-Arnold’s Contract
Now that Alexander-Arnold is a Real Madrid player, some details about his contract with them are being revealed.
According to Sky Sports, Madrid has set a €250m release clause for their new player. “The Spanish giants rate the now former Liverpool defender so highly, they wanted to tie him down to a lucrative six-year contract, which includes a weighty clause to deter any other clubs from making an approach over the duration of his contract,” said Sky Sports News senior reporter Rob Dorsett.
Saying Goodbye
In the official statement released by Liverpool, they talked about all the titles Alexander-Arnold has won with them. They include two Premier League titles, the Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup.
The club also showed its appreciation for the full-back. “Alexander-Arnold leaves Liverpool FC with the club appreciative and grateful for his contribution to those successes.”
While the departure seems to be accepted by the English side, most of the club’s fans can’t accept what they call a betrayal. Many believed that Alexander-Arnold will retire at Liverpool, but this isn’t the case anymore.

End Of My Liverpool Rant
Alexander-Arnold has the right to want a new challenge. The way he left, however, was kind of a betrayal. He didn’t allow Liverpool to benefit financially from his departure. Now, the club simply has to move forward.
