The 2024/2025 season of La Liga has been one to remember. There were tense fights to be seen on both sides of the table. After all was said and done, who came out on top and who had to bid their farewell to the highest level of Spanish soccer?
Barcelona Takes The Win
At the beginning of May, Barcelona had more points than their biggest rival, Real Madrid, but the title of La Liga Champions wasn’t theirs quite yet. Everything came down to the last El Clásico of the season, which took place on May 10th.
If Barca won, they would increase their lead in the standings to seven points, with only three matchdays left in the season. If Real got the coveted three points, they would decrease Barcelona’s lead to just one point.
Despite Real’s good start, it was Barcelona who emerged victorious in the tense game. With that, they all but secured the La Liga crown. Then, on May 15th, having beaten Espanyol, they officially became the Spanish champions. Real had to settle for second place. Atletico Madrid completed the La Liga podium.
Who Got Relegated?
As is the case every season, three teams had to bid their farewells to La Liga. Real Valladolid was the team that got relegated first, with several matchdays still to go. Throughout the season, they managed to earn a total of 16 points. The cutoff for the relegation zone ended up being 41, so they were quite a way from making it into the next season.
The other teams that made up the bottom three were Las Palmas and Leganés. Las Palmas was also a few points away from staying in La Liga, having finished the season with only 32 points. The situation was much more precarious for Leganes. After 38 matchdays, the team had accumulated 40 points.
They were only one point behind Girona and Sevilla. Jeff Lunhow, Leganes’ president, appeared at a press conference to evaluate the season. He apologised to the fans and assured them that he would do whatever it takes to help the team return to the First Division.
Who Will Get Promoted?
With three teams out of La Liga, there is space for three others to get promoted from La Liga 2. For now, only one team is sure to make an appearance in the First Division, having secured its position at the top of the standings. That team is Levante, which will return to La Liga after a three-year absence.
Two more teams will be promoted before the end of the season. One will be the vice-champion of La Liga 2, and the other will be the winner of the promotion play-offs. For now, Elche occupies the second spot in the standings, but they only have a two-point lead over both Real Oviedo and Mirandes. It remains to be seen which teams fight their way into the First Division.
End Of My La Liga Rant
La Liga will return in August, with Barcelona as the reigning champions. The 2024/2025 season was filled with great matches and beautiful goals. Will the next season manage to measure up?
