Kyle Schwarber and the Philadelphia Phillies just produced one of the best comebacks in the MLB this season. His big-time performance should come as no surprise, as this is the version of Schwarber who has been stepping up to the plate all through the month of May.
Schwarber has been the best power hitter in the league recently and is on one of the greatest power streaks ever. On Friday night, he became just the right player in MLB history to hit 20 home runs in the first 45 games of a season. The incredible list features Cy Williams, Mickey Mantle, Ken Griffey Jr., Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Luis Gonzalez, and Albert Pujols.
Schwarber recently made Phillies history, tying the franchise record with a home run in five consecutive games. He has nine home runs in 14 games during May. This has extended his MLB lead with 20 home runs; the next closest NL total is 14 by Atlanta Braves star Matt Olson.
The Phillies just had their most impressive victory all season long. They came back from being down 6-0 to defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates. This gutsy performance was headed by Schwarber, who hit two home runs and drove in five runs.
Schwarber has been a major part of the team’s turnaround, keeping them in similar games where they seem to be down and out. Bryce Harper joined him in the heroics on Friday, going 4/5 with a clutch two-run double in the ninth to tie the game.
Schwarber has been everything the Phillies needed him to be after re-signing him to a massive five-year deal worth $150 million. His push for 400 homers continues, with this recent performance pushing him up to 360 in his career.
