If there’s one thing the New York Knicks can’t be blamed for, it’s sticking with their head coach too long.

Tom Thibodeau, who led the Knicks to four playoff appearances in his five years as head coach, was fired Tuesday, according to ESPN. Despite often being criticized for overplaying premier talent and underusing his bench, Thibodeau is becoming off his most successful season at the helm in New York after having led the team to its first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in 25 years.

According to Knicks President Leon Rose, that wasn’t good enough.

‘Focused On Winning Championships’

“Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,” Rose said in a statement. “This pursuit led us to the decision to inform Tom Thibodeau that we’ve decided to move in another direction. We can’t thank Tom enough for pouring his heart and soul into each and every day of being the New York Knicks head coach.”

After earning consecutive 50-win seasons for the first time since the 1990s, New York ousted the Pistons in the first round before upsetting the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Unfortunately for New York and its celebrity-infused fan base, that’s where the team’s luck ran out.

The hot Indiana Pacers stole homecourt advantage with a pair of unlikely wins at Madison Square Garden and held on to eliminate the Knicks in six games. After the defeat, New York’s All-Star point guard Jalen Brunson spoke out in support of his head coach when asked about Thibodeau’s future.

“Is that a real question right now?” Brunson told reporters after Game 6. “You just asked me if I believe that he’s the right guy? Yes. Come on.”

Thibodeau Was A Winner With The Knicks

Thibodeau’s 226 wins in New York go down as the fourth most for a head coach in franchise history. The Knicks were his third head-coaching gig following stints with both the Chicago Bulls (2010-15) and Minnesota Timberwolves (2016-19). He was also a prominent assistant when the Boston Celtics won their 17th NBA title in 2008.

“Ultimately, we made the decision we feel is best for our organization moving forward,” Rose said in his statement, despite the Knicks having extended Thibodeau’s contract last offseason through 2027-28. “Tom will always be part of our Knicks family and we truly wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Bring The Band Back Together?

With the coaching vacancy now official, speculation to fill Thibodeau’s shoes is focused on all but one man: former Villanova men’s basketball coach Jay Wright. Wright, who retired from coaching in 2022 after winning a pair of National Championships in 2016 and 2018, coached three current Knicks players in Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges — and former Knicks guard Donte DiVincenzo.

The Knicks have proven they could get the band back together before with a roster full of Wildcats. Can they do it again with their head coach?

As with most things in the NBA offseason, only time will tell.
