The Kentucky Wildcats return home to take on the Oklahoma Sooners Wednesday night and the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday evening. The Wildcats look to keep building momentum in the final stretch of the season. Having won six of their last seven, it’s been a strong run for Mark Pope and his staff.
The past two weeks have been a rollercoaster for the Wildcats—hitting a buzzer-beater to edge out the LSU Tigers, toppling Tennessee on the road, then taking a 25-point drubbing from the Vanderbilt Commodores in Nashville. The Wildcats bounced back to beat the Arkansas Razorbacks on their own court. Crazy doesn’t even cover it. These Wildcats keep the adrenaline pumping and the games intense—winning really does fix everything.
Kentucky’s resilience this season has been remarkable, overcoming injuries and tough blowout losses while still securing significant road victories against teams like Tennessee. The weekend win over Arkansas demonstrated the fortitude of a team unwilling to give up, prevailing in a challenging environment despite a hostile crowd and difficult officiating. Their perseverance has kept them firmly in contention for the SEC race, standing at 6-3.
The Sooners enter this game with a 1-8 record in the SEC, despite being considered a team to watch before the season began. Things haven’t unfolded as Porter Moser and his staff had hoped, with their lone win coming at home against the Ole Miss Rebels. They’re led by Nigel Pack, one of the top guards from last offseason’s transfer portal, who is averaging 16.3 points per game and shooting 42.8% from beyond the arc.
Last season, former Sooner Otega Oweh lit up his old team with game-winners in both matchups. Now back for round three of this rivalry, the question is how he’ll perform. Over the past month, Oweh has found his groove again—scoring, attacking the rim, and playing with the downhill aggression that made him one of the nation’s best last year. Fully living up to his preseason SEC Player of the Year hype in a big way.
The big question for Wildcat fans is which team will show up—the one that went to Nashville and quickly fell behind by double digits, or the Arkansas squad that came out strong. Fans are hoping for the latter. This team’s Jekyll-and-Hyde tendencies all season have made their starts anything but predictable.
The Wildcats will take on a Sooners team that hasn’t played well on the road, making this a Quad 3 game you really need to win. A loss wouldn’t necessarily hurt the team, but it’s the kind you don’t want on the résumé, especially with all the momentum you have right now.
It’s a good week for Kentucky before the schedule ramps up, and with home games against Oklahoma and Tennessee, it’s the perfect chance to make a run for better SEC seeding. Taking both matchups would put the Wildcats at 8-3 in conference play heading into next weekend’s showdown with the Florida Gators.
All season, the go-to excuse has been injuries, and while the Wildcats have had some baffling losses, they haven’t completely folded. There’s been no quit in this team with time still on the clock. Coach Pope called it an SMH—shaking your head in today’s lingo—but no matter how far down they get, they find a way to dig in and keep playing.
