Kentucky Football Media Day gave fans the first real look at the Will Stein era as the Wildcats prepare for the 2026 season. With fall camp approaching, Kentucky revealed its expectations, roster changes, and new identity entering a new chapter in the SEC.
On Monday, August 3, Wildcats head coach Will Stein met with the media as Kentucky officially opened the Stein Era. Entering his first season in Lexington, Stein discussed the quarterback competition, roster depth, team culture. He also expounded upon expectations surrounding a program that has added more than 40 new players through recruiting and the transfer portal.
One of Stein’s biggest messages centered on competition. He made it clear that no starting positions have been locked in and that every player will have an opportunity to earn a role throughout fall camp.
Stein said: “There’s going to be a lot of competition out there. I know there was some talk about starting lineups and all that. There really are still no starters. We can project out where we feel like this team is going to be, but I want this team to be as competitive as possible from top down with the roster.”
Stein also added the following: “Why? Because we have to have strength in numbers. That, to me, is a key component to play winning football, especially in October and November where championships happen, is to have strength in numbers and to have winning football for multiple positions.”

Stein also emphasized that Kentucky’s identity won’t be defined by preseason predictions but by its daily approach. “Our process really is our winning edge. What separates us from others is our process how we practice, how we meet, how we recover, how we eat, sleep, and plan as coaches. I’m going to double down on that. The process is what makes us different and really excited about that.”

Kentucky defensive coordinator Jay Bateman enters Year 1 with a focus on building a tougher, more aggressive defense under Stein. Bateman has emphasized player development, versatility, and creating a defense that can attack opponents in multiple ways. He stated: “I think the biggest thing is building confidence in our players and putting them in positions to be successful.”
Bateman has also praised the talent and leadership within Kentucky’s roster, especially as the Wildcats transition into a new defensive system. Sloan has stressed that the offense will be built around execution, tempo, and understanding the details of the system. He stated: “It’s not about running plays. It’s about playing football the right way.” There is a new quarterback room and several portal additions, so Sloan believes chemistry will be critical heading into the season. Kentucky running back C.J. Baxter enters the 2026 season as one of the biggest additions to Stein’s roster rebuild. The former Texas Longhorns standout brings SEC experience and adds another weapon to a Wildcats offense looking to become more explosive. Stein has praised Baxter’s mentality, veteran leadership, and ability to impact the offense.
Willie Rodriguez returns as one of Kentucky’s most reliable offensive weapons and was selected as one of the Wildcats’ representatives at SEC Media Days alongside Kenny Minchey and Ty Bryant. Tight ends have been important in Stein’s offensive philosophy, and Rodriguez could become a key piece in both the passing game and blocking schemes.
