The Will Stein era is in full swing for Kentucky Football, and the program could be about to deal a blow to its bitter rival.
News broke today that five-star Louisville commit Ja’Hyde Brown will be in Lexington for Kentucky’s matchup against LSU this weekend, a major development in a bizarre recruiting story. Brown committed to Indiana in January of this year before flipping his commitment to the Cardinals in March, but it seems his options have reopened as of late.
Ranked as the No. five WR recruit in the class of 2027, Brown is a top-30 overall prospect garnering significant attention from rival schools. A Kentucky native playing for Christian Academy of Louisville, the 17-year-old has stayed home thus far but looks to be open to enticement from other programs. According to Steve Wiltfong, Brown has locked in October visits with Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas.
What Would Ja’Hyde Brown Bring To Kentucky Football
The 5’10”, 186-pound WR is regarded as one of the more athletic receivers in the 2027 class. Brown recently recorded a 4.39-second 40-yard dash as well as a 37.1-inch vertical jump. He’s an advanced route runner with blistering directional speed, furthering that ability by being a threat after the catch. He has exceptional field vision and is considered a potential three-level threat. Despite being undersized compared to some other top receivers, he has the raw physical tools and deceptive strength to succeed at the next level.
Brown has, as expected, gotten off to a torrid start to his senior season. He averages 16.3 yards per catch with 57 receptions and 22 touchdowns in just 17 quarters played through his most recent game on October third. This is a vast improvement on what was a stellar junior season, a campaign where he averaged just under 16.0 yards per catch with 24 receiving touchdowns.
It’s no surprise to see Brown dominate the competition, as he had a strong offseason that saw him pick up awards across several elite showcases during the summer. He won The Opening Rivals Overall MVP award at the Nike Headquarters in June. Then he immediately took home the accolade of top wide receiver at the Rivals Camp in Nashville. His performances saw him named the 247Sports Preseason Player of the Year for Kentucky back in August.

End Of My Kentucky Football Rant
Brown’s recruitment process is unlikely to be truly decided until National Signing Day in December, but it looks like Kentucky is firmly in the mix for his signature. This month will be crucial for his recruitment process, as his visits with opposing programs are locked in for the next three weekends. The Wildcats will have the first opportunity to make an impression on the youngster, an advantage often overlooked in these situations.
Brown may well choose to remain with Louisville, but there is an opportunity for Will Stein and his staff to poach an elite talent from their in-state rival.
With Stein’s new-look Wildcats making some noise in the SEC, recruits of Brown’s stature could be lured to Lexington with lucrative NIL packages. The opportunity to play for an emerging, developing program with an ambitious young coach could also play a part.

All in all, it’s an exciting development for a program in the midst of a major rebuild. Kentucky football now has the means to compete with some of the other top schools. Will Stein has secured some of the biggest commitments in program history with the likes of Jake Nawrot, as well as assembled a top-10 transfer class. All of this has been done before he’s even completed his first full season. Fans of the gridiron Wildcats have a bright future to look forward to.
