On Saturday night, the Kentucky Wildcats turned up the intensity in the second half, pulling away from the Indiana Hoosiers for a 72-60 win. The victory occurred in front of a sold-out Kentucky crowd eager for change and treated to an inspired, fighting group effort.
The Wildcats faced tough competition all season and had trouble putting points on the board, and the first half tonight was no exception. Kentucky secured its first Power Four win over Indiana, and defeating a rival is a huge confidence boost for the rest of the year. Trailing 39-32 at halftime, Kentucky came out firing in the second half, tightening up their defense and clicking on offense. The Wildcats capped off the stretch with a 19-4 run over seven minutes to take control of the game.
Going forward, Kentucky needs to find a reliable go-to scorer, whether it’s Jaland Lowe, who came up big tonight at point guard who delivered key defensive plays. While their inconsistent shooting is still a concern, getting a win after the past few weeks is definitely a welcome boost.
The energy and effort all night were a welcome surprise for many, as the season had been on a downward slide due to a lack of effort. This time, Kentucky smothered Indiana, making things tough for them. The Hoosiers shot just 3-for-14 from deep in the first half, and the Wildcats kept up the pressure, holding them to 1-for-10 from beyond the arc in the second half.

Indiana had trouble holding onto the ball all night, with Kentucky forcing 17 turnovers and keeping them trailing through much of the middle of the second period. The energy in Rupp Arena was unlike anything seen all season, fueled by Jaland Lowe stepping up as the MVP late in the game. Mo Dioubate dominated the boards with 12 rebounds.
Facing a rival at home is always a great chance to reset and work out the kinks, and while some of the Wildcats’ issues remain, there were clear signs of progress tonight. Keeping up that same effort could help get the team back on track. With Jayden Quaintance set to return soon, having more bodies should bring an added spark similar to what was seen in this game.
Over the past few weeks, frustration had been building as many fans expressed their displeasure with the rough start to the season. From message boards to loud boos in Nashville after a 35-point loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs, the tension was obvious. This win was much needed, not just for the fans, but for Pope as well, since the pressure was clearly getting to him. A victory has a way of making everything feel better.
Maybe this win will fix the issues. The St. John’s Red Storm are up next in Atlanta against Pope’s former coach, Rick Pitino, followed by the Bellarmine Knights to end the holidays. this is a great opportunity to build some momentum heading into SEC play.
Brandon Garrison’s hustle hasn’t gone unnoticed—diving for loose balls, taking the game to heart after last week’s benching, hitting practice with a new fire to change his habits. His effort tonight is worth a mention, and Pope giving his players a shot at redemption is another great thing. It’s all about learning from your mistakes.
Kentucky got a much-needed win with a tough schedule ahead, and the Wildcats delivered their best performance on Saturday night in a heated rivalry game. Whether they can keep up this level of effort remains to be seen. Tonight proved that even without overwhelming talent, Kentucky battles, shows grit, and plays with heart—plenty to be proud of.
