Joe Fagnano is a name that may not ring a bell for many casual college football fans, but his name should gain traction as NFL draft talks intensify. He may not be a traditional prospect, but the UConn QB still deserves more recognition when April arrives.

Collegiate Career

Fagnano began his collegiate career playing for the Maine Black Bears. He took part in 27 games over four years at Maine, but his journey did not end there. With his COVID year, he had remaining eligibility in which he used to enter the transfer portal. This decision is what led to this very moment.

Fagnano transferred to the UConn Huskies, where he was expected to fight for a starting spot in camp. To many’s surprise, he won the starting job and led the team into week one. What was expected to kickstart the next moment in his career led to a terrible setback. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in his second game.

Fagnano returned to camp in 2024 in a familiar spot. He once again needed to win the job, and he did just that. This was the season where glimpses of hope began to leak through. He tallied a new career high of 20 touchdowns and 1631 passing yards. All whilst only throwing four interceptions. A good season, but nothing popped off the charts. He wasn’t coming close to NFL eyes, but that would all change when 2025 comes around.

Elite Statistical Season

Fagnano entered his seventh season of college football in 2025, and it was a season to remember. Featuring stunning performances and legendary moments. UConn showed they had a star at quarterback. Fagnano threw for 3,441 yards, 28 touchdowns, and just ONE interception! It took him 385 pass attempts to throw his one and only pick. He led UConn to nine wins this season, including a victory over the eventual ACC champion Duke Blue Devils.

Fagnano put up stats that pushed tested UConn records to their fullest. He was second in passing yards and touchdowns in a single season behind Dan Orlovsky. Fagnano had legendary stretches in his 2025 season, including one that compared him to one of the greatest college QBs in recent memory.

Joe Burrow had incredible moments for the LSU Tigers, and in 2019, he recorded five consecutive games with 250+ yards, 3+ touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He was the only player to do this in the past decade, until Fagnano did so this season. With numbers and moments like this, surely he jumps onto NFL big boards, right? Not so fast. The seventh-year college QB still has one major flaw that is ruining his draft stock.

Biggest Weakness

Fagnano’s biggest weaknesses have absolutely nothing to do with his play on the football field. It has everything to do with something completely out of his control. His age. At 24 years of age, he seems to be over the threshold of teams caring about stats and production, and more about future development. Now, a 24-year-old QB in his seventh year in college football seems unheard of, so of course, his draft stock should be limited. Well, actually no.

Tyler Shough was drafted with the 40th overall pick in April’s NFL draft. His current age is 26. If he is able to be drafted in the early second round, what is making so many people shy away from Fagnano? If it was a scenario that was never before seen and had no template to follow, sure, but it literally happened this year!

Fagnano has all the tools to be an NFL quarterback. He has great arm strength, elite accuracy, and incredible ability to throw in tight windows. His ball security jumps off the chart for obvious reasons, and he has the frame of an NFL QB. Standing at 6’4 225lbs, Fagnano isn’t glued to one spot in the pocket either. He demonstrated the ability to move around on multiple occasions. He isn’t the most mobile quarterback, but he certainly won’t take sacks due to a lack of agility.

Fagnano has few weaknesses, none of which are on the football field. His age and level of competition are all that are discussed as negatives impacting his draft stock. He can do it all on the football field; NFL scouts just need to realize that. Shough saw a large increase in hype as the draft neared, so maybe similar things will come for Fagnano. He is currently projected to be a late-day three draft pick, potentially even a priority undrafted free agent.

End Of My Fagnano Rant

Fagnano is absolutely the biggest sleeper I’ve seen when it comes to the 2026 NFL draft class. In what seems to be a very weak quarterback draft class, Fagnano looks to be a bright spot. Many players have been projected to go ahead of him, but I’m having a hard time seeing why. I understand the age may be hard to swallow, but he certainly deserves more praise. His talent level and production should have him being drafted between rounds two and four. There is no world where he should be talked about as an undrafted free agent.
