The Jeremiyah Love NFL Debut turned a month of uncertainty into a successful opener Sunday. The Arizona Cardinals rookie running back scored a 5-yard touchdown during Arizona’s 26–14 Week 1 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. The third overall pick finished with 11 carries for 41 yards, two catches for nine yards, and one touchdown. Those numbers gave Arizona an early indication of how its rookie running back can contribute.
Love’s debut came after a high ankle sprain threatened his availability for the opener. The rookie returned to practice during the week and was cleared to play, leaving the Cardinals to determine how much work he could handle against the Chargers.
Love needed only three NFL carries to reach the end zone. The rookie capped Arizona’s 11-play, 70-yard opening drive with a 5-yard touchdown run with 8:49 remaining in the first quarter, putting the Cardinals ahead 7–0.
Love’s touchdown answered one of the biggest questions surrounding him before kickoff. Arizona trusted its prized rookie in a high-value situation despite his recent ankle injury, rather than limiting him to lower-risk opportunities.
Love finished with 41 rushing yards on 11 attempts, including an 18-yard long run, while adding two receptions for nine yards on four targets. The game statistics gave Love 50 yards from scrimmage, showing that Arizona already views him as more than a conventional early-down runner.
Love’s 11 carries ranked behind Tyler Allgeier, who handled 17 attempts for 61 yards. The distribution offered a clearer picture of Arizona’s plans than the rushing totals alone.
Allgeier handled more of the traditional rushing workload while Love received the opening-drive touchdown and four passing-game targets. The split allowed Arizona to put Love in important situations without immediately giving the rookie a full-time workload following his return from injury.
LaFleur’s philosophy also supports that approach. Before the season, Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur explained that he does not expect one running back to handle every snap. He said, “Not one running back can take all 65 snaps,” while discussing the need to rotate backs and keep them healthy over a 17-game season in the team’s plan.
Eleven carries should not be viewed as evidence that Arizona lacks confidence in its number three overall pick. Goal-line work and four targets gave Love meaningful opportunities despite the limited rushing volume.

A 50-yard day from scrimmage wasn’t spectacular statistically, but the usage offered useful insight into how the Cardinals intend to deploy him. Arizona finished with 393 total yards and controlled possession for 37:31.
Jacoby Brissett completed 27 of 37 passes for 277 yards and one touchdown, while Trey McBride caught nine passes for 95 yards and a score. That passing production gave the Cardinals another way to move the ball and kept Love from carrying the offense in his first regular-season appearance. LaFleur can continue increasing Love’s high-value opportunities without immediately abandoning the backfield rotation that helped Arizona control the game against Los Angeles.
Increased rushing attempts, red-zone opportunities, passing-game involvement, and offensive snaps will show whether Love’s workload is expanding. Allgeier’s 17-carry performance gives Arizona a dependable option for substantial rushing work, allowing the Cardinals to increase Love’s involvement without immediately making him the unquestioned lead back. Multiple games will be needed to determine whether Love is ready for a majority workload.
