Kentucky had been waiting all season for this moment, and on Saturday, Jayden Quaintance finally took the court for the first time. The anticipation paid off as he helped lead the Wildcats to a 78-66 win over No. 22 St. John’s Red Storm at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
On Saturday afternoon, the crowd in the arena and across the commonwealth held its breath as Jaland Lowe left the court with a shoulder injury. The timing made a return seem unlikely, but relief swept through the fanbase when he came back and became one of the biggest contributors to their win.
This Wildcats team needs a healthy Lowe to make a run this season, and with a healthy Lowe and Quaintance, it adds an undeniable punch to the lineup moving forward.
The most exciting moment of the season came when Quaintance checked into the game and immediately made his presence felt on the court. With rim protection, shot-blocking, and relentless aggressiveness, his skills seem limitless when he’s playing at a high level. The energy was there today in a game the Wildcats desperately needed.
Who knew a future lottery pick could transform the team and lift the energy of a program that’s been struggling lately? Now, with both Quaintance and Lowe on the court together, there’s a real chance to see the improvement that was missing early in the season when they were both out.
Quaintance wrapped up the day with 10 points and eight rebounds, a pretty solid way to kick off a first game.
An early Christmas present is fun most of the time, but facing a former coach makes it even more special. Mark Pope went head-to-head with Rick Pitino in a familiar part of the country that the fanbase loves to visit, a place affectionately known as “Catlanta”. After years of traveling there for SEC tournament play or neutral site games in the Georgia area.
Early on, the Wildcats gave fans little to cheer about, falling behind by eight points to the Red Storm and looking out of sorts. With their shooting struggles continuing, the second half brought a change as Kentucky came out firing and never looked back. Cruising to a comfortable win in front of a crowd eager for excitement, and securing a victory over a ranked opponent.
With 16:07 left in the second half, St. John’s led 41-33, but then Oweh, Kam Williams, and the rest of the crew took over, sparking a run. Wearing down the Red Storm with relentless defensive pressure. They knocked down some big threes in the closing minutes, capping off a fun holiday weekend and sending Wildcat fans home happy.
The highlight was Oweh dropping 20 points, looking like the player from last year who dominated games with his aggressive, physical style. He played his best game of the season in a much-needed win for Kentucky. A healthy Oweh and a reenergized team give this squad a whole new vibe heading into SEC play in January.
The perfect way to kick off Christmas week.
The Wildcats have improved to 8-4 on the season and will head back to Rupp Arena on Tuesday afternoon to take on Bellarmine before enjoying a holiday break until January 3rd. With Lowe and Quaintance healthy, the team’s momentum could shift the dynamics of the entire season. It’s still a wait-and-see situation, but for now, Kentucky fans have plenty to be excited about as both players seem determined to push through to the finish line.
