Connor Hellebuyck entered the 2026 Winter Olympics facing the question of whether he could win big games. The doubt was much like that for the men’s United States hockey team, whether it could step up and beat Canada when it mattered most. On a glorious Sunday morning, all disbelief was pushed aside. Hellebuyck delivered a clutch outing that will live on in hockey lore. A 46-year-old gold medal drought ended in a thrilling 2-1 overtime American win.
Hellebuyck has crafted a career filled with remarkable achievements. He is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, given to the best goaltender in the National Hockey League. In 2025, he won the Hart Memorial Trophy, given to the most valuable player of the regular season, the first goalie to win in 10 years. In the last two seasons, he won the William Jennings Trophy for the game’s lowest goals-against average.
Hellebuyck, in other words, has won every individual trophy a goaltender aims for. Statistically, he is among the best the game has to offer, winning 64% of his contests and saving nearly 92% of his shots. His elite goalie play helped turn the Winnipeg Jets into consistent winners. They earned the President’s Trophy for the best 2024-25 record, and Hellebuyck was the face of it.
Hellebuyck has not carried his fantastic regular-season play into the playoffs. A noticeable dip in performance occurred over the last few years. In the 2024 playoffs, he went 1-4 with a dismal 5.23 goals against average and .864 save percentage. The Colorado Avalanche feasted on him and never let up.
Hellebuyck’s playoff woes didn’t improve last year in his most criticized moment. Against the St. Louis Blues, he was pulled from three games, all on the road. Winnipeg won the series but then lost the next to the Dallas Stars, where they once again lost every road game. Hellebuyck finished his road playoff stretch 0-6 with an awful 5.06 GAA and .809 save percentage.
Once an athlete, coach, or team gets a reputation for not winning a big game, it becomes awfully hard to shake. Weird things start to happen, and some of that likely came to play during Hellebuyck’s awful 2025 playoffs. Even when a player says it doesn’t affect them, they answer a million questions about it. Poorer performance from superstars indicates they are struggling with the criticism.
Hellebuyck’s tremendous abilities and career performance made him the go-to for Team USA goaltending candidates. It was also fair, though, for fans to wonder if he would step up in the Winter Olympics’ largest moments, i.e., against Canada.
The Miracle on Ice has become Americana, for good reason. A team of United States college players beating a roster filled with professional Soviet Union stars, the best the world had to offer, should always be the greatest upset. Any Team USA following that will be continuously compared, especially with the Olympic gold drought extended to 46 years.
Mike Sullivan, the American head coach, trusted Hellebuyck as his number one goalie. Strong, but not light-out performances, followed. Combined with a skilled offense and dynamic defense, the U.S. earned a Gold Medal Game berth against arch-rival Canada.
Twice in 2002 and 2010, Team USA lost the Gold Medal Game against Canada. Never in an Olympic elimination matchup against the Canadians had the Americans won, also losing a 2014 semifinal contest. Want to take a gigantic stage, there was none bigger than what occurred this Sunday morning.
Canada is the standard of hockey, and what a mountain for the United States to climb. To scale it, Hellebuyck couldn’t keep giving strong performances; he needed to deliver a legendary one. Want to shut up those who say you wilt in big games? Beat the Canadians on this stage and deliver hockey gold back to the United States, exactly 46 years to the day since the Miracle on Ice.
That is exactly what Hellebuyck did, becoming a brick wall that couldn’t be penetrated. Canada dominated the second period, taking 19 shots. This was the most ever for one team in a gold medal game; the Canadians scored only once. The Americans played defensively throughout, and it could have easily broken open.
Take the second and third periods together, and Canada controlled 33-18 in shots. As great as Hellebuyck was in the second, he was otherworldly in the third. His stick save on Devon Towns will live in Team USA legend forever; without it, there is no gold medal. The pace of play was intense, and the Canadians looked primed to capitalize. Hellebuyck ensured they didn’t, giving the U.S. a chance for overtime.
Jack Hughes will be another legend from these Olympics, and it is fitting that he scored the Golden Goal. His game-winning shot will be played for years to come, and it will never get old. The one who truly made this day, though, one that American fans have dreamt of for 46 years, is Hellebuyck.
Jim Craig was the goalie of the 1980 Team USA squad. His otherworldly play ignited the Miracle on Ice as he made one unbelievable stop after another. An underdog gets hope from its netminder; Craig provided that in spades. Doing so made him an American folk hero. He now has company.
Hellebuyck has the greatest counter to any criticism that comes from what he did not do against the likes of Colorado and St. Louis. The U.S. has made remarkable strides in its hockey program with its best talent pipeline ever. The future is tremendously bright, but to get to the highest level, Team USA had to prove it could beat Canada on the largest stage. The Americans can now say they are a true Canadian rival.
Hellebuyck helped pave the way to end a 46-year drought. Many fans wondered if they would ever see a gold medal victory live. As wonderful as the Miracle on Ice replays are, so many weren’t alive or old enough to remember seeing it in person. Now, such enthusiasts have their own moment, one that will open so many doors for the hockey program.
Hellebuyck and Jack Hughes will be this generation’s version of Craig and Mike Eruzione, the face of the 1980 USA team. Craig, Eruzione, and the rest of the fabled squad helped make this day possible by bringing belief and getting Americans excited about hockey. The victory on Sunday morning will elevate it to levels where the U.S. should expect to consistently bring home gold medals. Thank you, Hellebuyck; it is only the beginning.
