Naz Reid is expected to decline his $15 million dollar player option and seek a long-term deal after a career year. The Wolves should make retaining Reid a top priority, as he’s not only a productive bench scorer but also a versatile big who can play alongside Rudy Gobert. However, Julius Randle( $30.9 million dollar player option) could also opt out and command a new deal, creating a potential crowded and expensive frontcourt. If both return, the Wolves risk pushing their payroll deep into the tax and facing second apron penalties. The front office should explore sign-and-trade opportunities for Randle if he opts out, or even consider moving Gobert to free up space.
With limited cap space, the Wolves will need to be creative in their approach to free agency. Nickeil Alexander-Walker is a valuable 3-and-D guard, but his marked value may be too much if Minnesota prioritizes Randle and Reid. If Alexander-Walker leaves, the Wolves should look to affordable alternatives like Tyus Jones, Malcolm Brogdon, Tre Jones, or Gary Trent Jr.
The Timberwolves should be aggressive in pursuing a true difference-maker via trade. Pairing Anthony Edwards with another All-Star caliber player could elevate Minnesota to true title-favorites. The Wolves could dangle Julius Randle, Naz Reid, or Jaden McDaniels and future first-round picks to trade a guy like Brandon Ingram, Lauri Markkanen, Dejounte Murray, or Kristaps Porzingis.
The Timberwolves are on the cusp of true title contention in a treacherous Western Conference. Their 2025 offseason will require tough choices and creative maneuvering. If they prioritize Naz Reid, pursue affordable backcourt and wing depth, aggressively explore trades for another star, and add more shooting. Minnesota can address its weaknesses while staying under the second apron. Smart management and targeted roster upgrades can be the difference between another deep playoff run and making the NBA Finals for the first time.
