Gausman has been a pillar and fan favorite of Toronto for five years now, but he’s having a down season in this, the finale of his five-year, $110 million contract. In his 23 games for the Blue Jays before the MLB Trade Deadline, he had a 4.38 ERA and 1.29 WHIP over 127.1 IP. This 14-year veteran brings a battle-tested right-hander to the middle of the Chicago Cubs’ rotation, which has struggled with injuries. If joining a new team and going on a playoff run can get him closer to his 2025 3.59 ERA, he’s got the potential to be more than just a reliable arm for the Cubs.
Toronto received INF Ty Southisene and OF Brett Bateman, two promising prospects. Southisene was Chicago’s number three prospect, and he boasts a .764 OPS across High-A and Double-A this year. Best known for contact and speed, he also has 31 stolen bases. Bateman was their 12th-ranked prospect, impressing in Double-A.
