Giannis Antetokounmpo’s name has become synonymous with limitless stardom in the world of basketball. “Giannis”, as he is commonly known worldwide, has already at the age of 30, collected every one of the accolades and achievements that an NBA player can aspire towards.
The nine-time All-Star, two-time MVP, and 2021 NBA Champion is now approaching a pivotal crossroads in his storied and celebrated career. With a whole year and perhaps two remaining on his contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis remains that special player who is poised to continue his upward trajectory towards being one of the best basketball players of all time.
The deflated feeling that accompanied the Bucks’ game five series loss to the Indiana Pacers did not, in any way, support the pathway that was envisioned for the Athenian superstar. Bucks point guard and fellow high-profile star teammate Damian Lillard suffered a dreaded torn Achilles tendon that sidelined him, leading to a Game 5 loss and elimination. Milwaukee’s dream of having two decorated NBA stars carry them to a multiple-title dynasty seems to have forever vanished.
That leaves multiple scenarios on the table, in terms of both the future of the Bucks and their beloved Giannis. The one that makes the most sense, at least for the duration of his remaining contract, is to move Giannis, in what would be a blockbuster trade, to the Toronto Raptors. A trade that would send shockwaves through the NBA, ultimately benefiting all parties in a variety of ways.
A possible trade to the Raptors would command a substantial return for the Bucks. The first name that comes to mind would be current NBA All-Star and 2021-22 Rookie of the Year power forward Scottie Barnes. In addition to moving Barnes, the Raptors would have to surrender their first-round pick for the 2025 draft.
With the ninth pick, the Milwaukee Bucks could continue rebuilding with a strong nucleus of players and support a youth movement by selecting an impact point guard, such as Jeremiah Fear from Oklahoma or Kasparas Jakucionis from Illinois. The Bucks do not have a pick in 2025 until well into the second round. With pick number 47, it is unlikely that remaining stagnant at this time is the right move for a team, which appears to be in disrepair and decline.
Giannis alone is who would be sent to Toronto, and the excitement that his presence would generate in the Danforth “Greektown” section of Toronto would be immeasurable. Not to mention that the city of Toronto itself is a truly cosmopolitan and international metropolis, boasting a global brand. The entire country of Canada, with a population of over 30 million, would pivot in support, or at the very least, acknowledge the acquisition of a global superstar by its lone NBA franchise.
Toronto has grown to become a hub of elite basketball talent. Top, qualified coaches have established programs such as the Scarborough Basketball Association (SBA) in Toronto’s East end, and the list of players, both past and present, with roots to the city and its grassroots programs is both proud and substantial. As the NBA finals are set to begin in a matter of days, the Canadian contingent is leading the charge in almost every direction.
2024-25 NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder hails originally from Hamilton, Ontario. Thunder defensive specialist Luguentz Dort, from Montreal, has joined SGA on the Canadian national team for numerous International tournaments, including most recently, in the Paris Olympics. It was in the Olympics last summer, where SGA, Dort, Jamal Murray, RJ Barrett, and Dillon Brooks took down the mighty Giannis and team Greece 86-79 in group play. Giannis was tasked with trying to defeat Canada’s formidable cast of players almost single-handedly.
With the Raptors, Giannis will not have that problem. There already is a relatively strong supporting cast, even without Barnes. Point guard Immanuel Quickley is just 25, while RJ Barrett, despite having played six seasons in the NBA, is only 24. Both of these Raptor players are on the cusp of becoming NBA All-Stars. A seismic addition, such as Giannis, would effectively catapult Quickley and Barrett towards realizing their full potential.
The Raptors are missing that one impact player who can handle himself in the paint. Someone who will grab the offensive rebounds that, statistically, were lopsided in favour of the opposition through most of the past two seasons. Giannis covers so many areas of need for this Toronto Raptors team that his presence almost guarantees a deep playoff run as soon as next year.
It has been no secret that the NBA has gone through a period of declining viewership. This could be due in part to the fact that the league is not fully capitalizing on the full global exposure of its greatest players. Giannis could remain, eventually sulking in a desperate situation with the Milwaukee Bucks, simply playing out the remaining year or two on his current contract. Conversely, he could create an entirely new global brand. Elevating new communities that are so passionately tied to his cultural roots. Toronto is where it’s at for Giannis. No city outside of Athens itself would help invigorate the excitement surrounding his arrival as much as Toronto. It will be too costly, and the future implications for the NBA too dire, if he were to go anywhere else. Raptors president Masai Ujiri should be having some meaningful conversations that will lead to this blockbuster trade happening.
