A France vs Spain preview: Who gets a spot in the World Cup Final? The French will be looking for their third straight appearance, while the Spanish look to begin a new era with Lamine Yamal. Here’s what to look for in this matchup.
France Vs Spain Preview: The Recent Matchup History

France’s dominance has been well documented in recent years. Under Kylian Mbappe, the French have not lost a World Cup match in regulation. Their worst finish was a penalty shootout loss to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.
France’s dominance, however, has not translated against Spain since Yamal entered the picture. Since 2024, the teams have met in two important matches: the Euro 2024 semis and the UEFA Nations League semis in 2025.
Spain won both contests by one goal. The first match was a 2-1 victory for the Spanish. The second one was a high-scoring 5-4 victory for Yamal and company.
This upcoming match is another semifinal duel between Spain and France. If the Spanish emerge victorious, there may be some uncomfortable questions for the French to answer.
Unstoppable Force Meets Immovable Object

The intrigue for this France vs Spain preview comes down to which side gives first. The French have a high-powered offense and have scored 16 goals in the tournament, which is second-best. The Spanish, on the other hand, just allowed their first goal of the tournament to Belgium in the quarterfinal.
It will be interesting to see how successful that vaunted French attack will be on Tuesday. Of their six matches in this World Cup, France has scored at least twice five times. An aspect of the French that is lethal is their counter.
With Mbappe and Ousmane Dembélé’s speed, they are most dangerous after a turnover. What Spain does well, though, is limit counters. Their forwards and midfielders do a great job of pressing up on players after a sudden change of possession, preventing easy initial dribbles to start a possession.
It will be interesting to see whether the Spanish aggression serves as a blueprint to slow the French or if it plays into France’s hands.

End Of My France Vs Spain Preview Rant

The recent history of France vs Spain favors the Spanish. Notice, however, that Spain had to score 2+ goals to win those games. Their offense in this tournament has not been in the same class as in years past.
In six WC matches, Yamal and company have scored more than one goal just half the time. Yamal himself has been inconsistent, as he has only scored one goal the entire tournament. To beat the French, you have to be able to generate goals.
That’s what it took for Argentina in the final four years ago, and it may be what is required of the Spanish if the defense stumbles a bit. It will be interesting to see if the young Yamal will have a breakthrough game in a big spot. Will Mbappe also continue his quest to win the Golden Boot?
The star watch will be crucial for this particular match. When considering this France vs Spain preview, it’s important to note that there’s a lot on the line for both sides. Can France establish itself in rarefied air, becoming just the third team to reach three straight World Cup finals? Will Spain instead announce its arrival at the foot of their prodigy?
