Did you know there are currently only two English managers in the Premier League? Eddie Howe has at least won a trophy for Newcastle, but the Premier League has become increasingly dominated by foreign coaches. Nevertheless, there have still been some great English soccer managers. Such managers have won many domestic and European trophies with their clubs. These are a few of the great English soccer managers.

Herbert Chapman

Chapman was undoubtedly the best English manager of his generation, although he never managed the England team. With Huddersfield, he won two league titles and an FA Cup.

However, it was with Arsenal that he established the finest club soccer team in England. In 1930, this team first made its impact by winning the 1930 FA Cup. Chapman’s Arsenal went on to win two league titles in the early 1930s. Chapman was the manager who turned Arsenal into a major force in English soccer.

Herbert Chapman was, in my opinion, the most revolutionary English coach in soccer history. His biggest impact on English soccer came with his WM formation, which became the established formation for soccer teams in England. Not only a great tactician, Chapman was also one of the first to introduce floodlights and was a keen promoter of European soccer.

Alf Ramsey

Ramsey was both a great club and national team manager. For Ipswich, he took the club from the Third Division South up to the First Division. Then, he was able to win the league title with Ipswich in their first season in the First Division.

Ramsey’s tactical astuteness caught the attention of the FA, and he was appointed manager of the England soccer team in 1962. From here, he reorganized the England team and became a keen promoter of the 4-3-3 soccer formation. His tactics triumphed again in 1966 as the England soccer team won the World Cup at Wembley after a 4-2 victory against West Germany in the final. Ramsey is the only English manager to win the FIFA World Cup.

Bob Paisley

Why Paisley was never an England manager is a mystery. Paisley succeeded Shankly from the Anfield boot room and became the next manager of Liverpool during the 1970s. Upon his appointment, his Liverpool team soon added another league title in 1975. From here on, there was little to stop Paisley’s Liverpool as they dominated English soccer for the remainder of the decade into the ’80s. Paisley also won Liverpool their first European Cups in 1977 and 1978, then added another in 1981. Overall, Paisley remains Liverpool’s most successful manager.

Bobby Robson

Robson was a great club manager who won trophies in England and beyond. With Ipswich, he won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the 1970s and early ’80s.

Hereafter, his appointment with England in the early ’80s lasted until the 1990 World Cup, where Robson took England to the semi-finals. A penalty shoot-out defeat to Germany ended the World Cup run. It was one of England’s best-ever World Cups on foreign soil. Robson wasn’t always appreciated as England’s manager and had his fair share of critics in the English media after the Three Lions crashed out of Euro 88 in the first round. Nevertheless, he was one of England’s best managers from a tactical perspective, in my opinion.

Robson also had success with some top European clubs, including Barcelona and Porto. With Barcelona, the Coppa Del Rey and the Cup Winners Cup were won, and he also won the league at Porto.

End of My Great English Soccer Manager Rant

Managers such as Paisley, Robson, Ramsey, and Chapman were all great English soccer managers for their clubs. They won numerous domestic and European trophies between them, while Ramsey and Robson were also great England managers. English soccer needs more great coaches like them for the England team to win more trophies.
