The FIFA World Cup has had some fantastic teams, and the best have scored many goals in the finals. Among the national teams that usually top score in the cup are Brazil, Germany, France, and Argentina. These are the goal-scoring teams that scored the most times in World Cup tournaments.
The dazzling Brazilian team of this World Cup won the trophy with an emphatic 4-1 victory against Italy in the final. There were goals galore in their games with the Czechs and Peru as Brazil ran out 4-1 and 4- 2 winners. Pele was undoubtedly the fulcrum of this Brazilian team, who scored many goals. This Brazilian team scored 19 in that World Cup, and this was more than three a game with an average of 3.11.
It was in the earlier World Cups that Brazil scored the most goals. In the 1950 World Cup, this team played six games over two group stages. They played some great matches, especially in the second group stage when they thrashed Sweden 7-1 and Spain 6-1.
In the final itself, Uruguay defeated the Brazilian team even after going a goal down. In the second half, Uruguay scored twice to win the match 2-1. That victory ensured that they were champions, but Brazil set the scoring record in this cup with 22 goals in their matches.
The prolific Just Fontaine inspired the France team in this World Cup. The striker set goal-scoring records in the World Cup with a couple of hat-tricks in two games and plenty more goals in other matches. The hat-tricks came in their games with Paraguay, which they won 7-3, and West Germany. Against West Germany, Fontaine scored four as France ran out 6-3 victors. That match was a third-place playoff as France were defeated 5-2 by Brazil in the semi-finals. France scored 23 goals, an overall total that only two teams have eclipsed in a FIFA World Cup.
West Germany was quite a big surprise package of the 1954 FIFA World Cup, at a time when the country was still recovering from World War II. Aside from shocking Hungary in the 1954 World Cup final, this team scored the second-highest number of goals in a single tournament. With players like Max Morland and Helmut Rahn banging in the goals, the Germans thrashed three opponents. A 7-2 victory against Turkey was their biggest win of this tournament, but they also racked up 6-1 and 4-1 wins against Austria and Turkey. With such victories, the Germans scored 25 goals in 1954.
Hungary was the favorite to lift the Jules Rimet trophy in 1954. Sandor Kocsis and Ferenc Puskas spearheaded this team, which was a formidable forward combination. With those forwards up front, the team scored goal after goal in the group stages. Hungary defeated South Korea 9-0, which remains one of the record victories in the World Cup, and also thrashed West Germany 8-3. After the group stages, their margins of victory were somewhat smaller, but they still booked their place in the final.
They played West Germany again in the final, but the Hungarians could not repeat their earlier victories in a rain-soaked finale. After quickly going two goals down, the Germans got back in the game and ran out 3-2 winners. Few had expected a German victory against a team that set a FIFA World Cup scoring record of 27 goals during the finals in just five games.
Those teams set scoring records in the FIFA World Cup with some terrific forwards. Not all of them won the World Cup, as some also conceded quite a few goals. Nevertheless, these were still five of the most exciting teams in soccer history. It’s unlikely a team will ever eclipse Hungary’s amazing goal-scoring record in the more defensive modern game.
