After a painful defeat in the first leg of the semi-final, FC Barcelona needed to make up a four-goal difference to keep their Copa del Rey dreams alive. Atlético de Madrid weren’t going to make it easy for them. Both teams were ready to put their all into the 90 minutes on the iconic Camp Nou. Who ended up coming out on top?
Barcelona was determined not to waste even a minute of the limited time they had on the field. From the very first whistle, they pressed Atletico, noting shot after shot. Unfortunately for all the fans gathered at the Camp Nou, for a long time, none of their attempts was good enough.
The situation changed half an hour into the game. It was then that Blaugrana was awarded a corner, after which the ball ended up at Lamine Yamal’s feet. The hero of the match against Villareal passed it to the well-placed Marc Bernal. The rest, as they say, was history.
Atletico didn’t take the attacks lying down and answered with a few impressive attempts of their own. They couldn’t quite find the goal they were chasing, and all signs were pointing towards the first half ending with a score of 1-0. In the last minute of the three added minutes, though, Pedri, who had returned to the starting eleven, was fouled by Atletico’s goal. A penalty was awarded to the Catalan team, and Raphinha was the man appointed to take it. He made scoring look incredibly easy, putting Barcelona a step closer to levelling the playing field.
After the break, Barcelona was as hungry as ever, quickly returning to continuous attack on Atletico’s net. They had a problem, however, one by the name of Juan Musso. The goalkeeper was like an impenetrable wall, easily deflecting all attacks. It was because of his efforts that Blaugrana could not find a third goal for the better part of the second half.
The coveted goal did come, maybe a bit later than some fans may have hoped, but undeniably there. Once again, it was Bernal who scored it, this time, after a pass from João Cancelo. The Culers went wild as a quick VAR check confirmed that the player was not offside.
With only one goal separating Barcelona from digging their way out of the tough situation, the players put their all into the final minutes of the match. They created situation after situation, but could not convert any of them into what they so desperately needed. Although the game ended with an impressive 3-0 for the home team, it wasn’t enough for them to advance to the finale.
The final score may have been a disappointment to all loyal Culers, but the team showed impressive form when faced with a tough rival. Now the fans can only hope that it will transfer over to Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga and Champions League fixtures.
