The FIFA World Cup ended in July, but another competitive international soccer tournament kicks off in September 2026: Europe’s UEFA Nations League. England will begin a fresh UEFA Nations League campaign in a group that includes Spain, Croatia, and the Czech Republic. The Three Lions’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign was one of the most enthralling we have seen, with England ‘winning’ the third-place bronze medal playoff for the first time. Now England can go for glory again in the Nations League.
However, a sense of international soccer apathy might creep into a Nations League tournament that disrupts the fresh domestic seasons starting across Europe. We watched the World Cup a few months back, so why should England care about the Nations League? This is why England must treat the UEFA Nations League with the utmost gravity.
UEFA established the Nations League to reduce meaningless friendlies in European international soccer. It is a competitive international soccer tournament with tiered European association groups from group A to D. England plays in the top-tier group A again after winning group B in its previous campaign.
Each A group includes four teams. The winner of each group qualifies for the semi-final knockout stages. The remaining two teams then play in the final, with the winner lifting the Nations League trophy.
Thus, the UEFA Nations League is, in fact, more like a miniature European Championship for the group A teams. The top four groups include the best teams in Europe, much like the European Championship. With that in mind, the UEFA Nations League can be considered a good warm-up tournament for Euro 2028 England, and the UK will be hosting. It will give England a chance to play competitive international games against top-tier European opponents before the Euros kick off.
England will play two games against Spain, with a blockbuster opening showdown against the world champions at Wembley. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best in competitive games, which England seldom does in World Cups and European Championships. The matches against Spain will show us exactly how England measure up against the world and European champions. A victory against Spain would also give England a genuine chance of winning the UEFA Nations League. So, the Three Lions can’t afford to overlook the significance of those Spain matches.
Even though England is one of the Euro 2028 hosts, the Three Lions will still need to qualify for that tournament because there are four co-hosts. England are a very strong team, but there’s no guaranteed place in the Euros. Topping group A in the UEFA Nations League will grant England a play-off spot for the Euros, which provides some qualification insurance.
England might have just had their best FIFA World Cup on foreign turf, but Tuchel still has critics nonetheless. Some critics are still whinging about how England crumbled after going 1-0 up against Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. A good UEFA Nations League campaign for England will reduce the whinging about Tuchel, especially if the Three Lions win it. This tournament also gives Tuchel more serious competitive games to refine his tactical blueprints.
England’s persistent failure to win competitive international soccer championships has continued throughout the decades. The UEFA Nations League gives England another chance to win silverware and end the trophy drought. It is not a friendly shield, but a fiercely contested trophy for the elite nations of European soccer to win. Winning this trophy would be a huge breakthrough for England because it would shatter a psychological barrier that has plagued the Three Lions for generations.
Although the UEFA Nations League isn’t a major international tournament like the World Cup and European Championship, it is still a competitive trophy for England to win that includes the best teams in Europe. Winning the Nations League would end England’s trophy drought, which would be a big step forward for the Three Lions.
