Donovan Dent is an example of how patience and loyalty can bring success later on. Dent committed to New Mexico out of high school, after playing for Centennial High School in Corona, California. He took a while to develop into the team-leading superstar he is today. During Dent’s freshman campaign he averaged a lowly 5.6 points per game.
Donovan averaged 14.1 points during his sophomore year, earning Second-Team All-Mountain West honors. With some recognition to his name, many said he should enter the portal to play for a more competent program and better his resume for the NBA. Dent stayed at New Mexico for his Junior campaign and emerged as the Mountain West’s leading scorer.
New Mexico has had a great season this year. The Lobos currently have a record of 26-7, winning a Mountain West regular season title. Dent became the first ever Lobo to win Mountain West Player of the Year. New Mexico earned a ten seed and a first round matchup versus the Marquette Golden Eagles.
Dent has an excellent play style with a great ability to succeed in late-game situations. He has been extremely clutch for the Lobos this season in close contents, such as their matchups against UT Arlington, New Mexico State, and Colorado State. New Mexico has constantly relied on Dent to be a volume scorer who can give them 20 points on any given night. The Mountain West Player of the Year is not only an efficient shooter, but he also averages 6.5 assists per game, opening scoring chances for his teammates. Dent is the only player nationally averaging over 19 points and six assists per game, showcasing his ability to be one of the nation’s best dual-threats
Dent’s transition game is one the bests in the nation. He averages 5.3 transition possessions per game, tied for second most inthe country. He scores an average 1.274 points per possession (PPP). The combination of his efficiency and ability to generate point scoring from his transition make him lethal.
Dent will succeed and light a spark for New Mexico that will lead them to impressive victories in March. He has all the ideal traits and characteristics that are similar to March Madness legends that came before him. The Lobos are seeking revenge after losing in the Mountain West tournament. New Mexico is primed to be a Cinderella candidate in this year’s March Madness.
