The New York Knicks are coming off a victory over the Detroit Pistons in the First Round of the NBA Playoffs. They will now go on to face the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. This is going to be a difficult challenge for them for a multitude of reasons.
The Knicks have struggled with consistency so far in the playoffs. The only two players on the team that have been reliable are Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart. Their other three starting five, comprised of Karl-Anthony Towns Jr. (“KAT”), Mikal Bridges, and Ogugua (“OG”) Anunoby, all had more than one inconsistent game in the series against the Pistons.
Towns in particular has been precarious, with two ten point performances. This is much worse than the 24.4 ppg that he averaged during the regular season. He also fouled out of Game Six with 49.8 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, which could have turned out disastrous considering how close the game was. He got bailed out by the clutch play of Brunson to say the least.
The Celtics, on the other hand, are a consistent team. While they could have received more production from Kristaps Porzingis in the First Round against the Orlando Magic, all of their other starting five contributed consistently and within their expected value. Derrick White didn’t perform well in Game Five, but other than that, he was spectacular. The Celtics are also about to have their starting guard Jrue Holiday return; he brings consistency as well. Holiday suffered a right hamstring strain against Orlando that caused him to miss the last three games of the series, but he will likely return to the lineup (at least in some form) against the Knicks.
The Knicks may have been able to escape elimination by the Pistons, but if they have similar inconsistent performances against Boston, they will have a short-lived Eastern Conference Semifinals. An inexperienced team like the Pistons may not take advantage of inconsistency, but an experienced team like the Celtics capitalizes on any mistakes that are made.
The Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship in 2024 and they are looking to repeat that this year. They have brought back most of their players and most importantly, all of their starting five. The Knicks, however, have a different lineup this year. This is a disadvantage for the Knicks because the Celtics have championship chemistry built-in within their team, while the Knicks lack that overall chemistry that comes from playing together for multiple seasons.
The Knicks’ 51-31 record this season is deceptive. It may have placed them third in the Eastern Conference, but they were unable to win against any team that had 60 or more wins on the season. They were 0-4 against the Celtics, 0-4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and 0-2 against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This should be a massive concern for the Knicks because if they want to make it to the finals, they will have to go through the Celtics and likely the Cavaliers. There is also a strong possibility that the Thunder will make it to the finals, so they would have to face them as well.
This statistic is representative of who the Knicks are as a team. They are above average, but when put up against high-quality teams, they are simply unable to get the job done. The Knicks are a solid team, but they are a step below the top tier.
The Knicks and Celtics play the first game of their series this upcoming Monday, May 5, 2025, at 7:00 PM Eastern Time. The Knicks have quite the challenge ahead of them as the dominant Celtics look to continue their regular season success against them.
