Detroit Tigers center fielder Parker Meadows made his long-awaited season debut last night against division rival, the Chicago White Sox. Meadows has been on the injured list since spring training with a nerve issue in his upper right arm, and as of this weekend, he has finished his assignment in Toledo before joining the team in Chicago. Meadows went 2-4, highlighted by netting himself a triple while putting up three runs.
Meadows wasn’t the only Tiger to put up numbers last night, as the bats decided to wake up from the nap they took after last Friday’s offensive output against the Royals. Designated hitter Kerry Carpenter launched three home runs into the bleachers of Rate Field, leading the way as the Tigers knocked around White Sox pitchers for five home runs total.
Tigers starting pitcher Jack Flaherty tossed a strong game against Chicago, improving his record to 4-6 while only giving up one earned run. This win is despite Flaherty only striking out four batters during his six innings pitched, with White Sox hitters putting the ball into play for routine outs. Tigers’ rookie Dylan Smith made his major league debut in relief, throwing for two full innings, giving up one hit and a walk before relief pitcher John Brebbia closed out the bottom of the 9th.
Chicago starting pitcher Johnathon Cannon was shelled for five earned runs on four hits, only putting in three innings of work. The highlight of Cannon’s night is striking out five Detroit hitters. Chicago’s bullpen did not fare much better as they gave up a further eight runs, finally settling down in the top of the 8th to stem the bleeding.
The Detroit Tigers of 2025 are the beneficiaries of having an astounding amount of depth on their 40-man roster, as evidenced today by their beatdown of the White Sox. The return of CF Meadows proved to be the spark that got their offense rolling just by being back in the lineup, and with Carpenter able to feel more at ease further down the order, the results are evident in the box score.
That’s not to understate the efforts of players like second baseman Gleyber Torres, getting a pair of hits and a pair of runs each, and guys like Wenceel Perez and Dillon Dingler hitting timely bombs. All of this offense is with Spencer Torkelson having the night off, and guys like 3B Zack McKinstry and LF Riley Greene going 0-4 and 1-4 respectively.
LF Greene may not have had much to show for his efforts at the plate last night, but he had plenty of opportunities to showcase his defensive skills. Early in the game, even though he prevented a fly ball from crossing the yellow line, Greene was unable to make the catch, although he kept the ball in play. In the bottom of the 3rd, Greene redeemed himself in his own eyes, making a spectacular tumbling catch into the left field dirt. Greene is making a strong case for himself to be in Atlanta for the All-Star Game.
At the end of the night, even though it is only one game, Meadows shows what he means to the Tigers’ offense, an offense that is amongst the best in the Majors. The Tigers’ CF had a stolen base, triple, and made a spectacular play in center to save a run from scoring. His presence in the lineup seemed to light a fire under the other guys on the team, as evidenced on the scoreboard.
These Tigers are for real. Into June, they are the first team to reach 40 wins this season. They’ve only lost three games in a row twice this season, to the Dodgers and Guardians, respectively. They have routinely bounced back after a loss to build small winning streaks, rolled with the injury punches having had two of their starters on the IL over the last month, and don’t seem to let the ebbs and flows of the game bother them. If this year’s Detroit Tigers continue to win series the way they have this season, they are going to be in prime position to make a run at a World Series title.
