Every college football position seems to get its own award. Outside of the Heisman, there are 26 postseason awards for NCAA football, so what’s one more? Deion Sanders has proposed a “Prime Award” that would go to the Nations best cornerback. He also suggested, the NCAA should start by giving it to his player, Travis Hunter.

Coach Prime is the best coach in college football when it comes to marketing. He tries to get his signature on everything, and no one can blame him. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. While this may seem like nothing more than Sanders trying to pump up his own player, it’s actually a way for his legacy to go on forever.

After all, once Hunter is on to the NFL, the Prime Award would still be handed out every year, keeping Sanders in the spotlight. There are a couple holes in his plan, at least for the short term. For starters, the Jim Thorpe award is given to the best college defensive back every postseason. Sanders knows this, because he won it in 1988.

There can be more than one award for each category though. The Heisman is given to the best college football player in the country. So is the Maxwell and the Walter Camp. The Chuck Bednarik Award is given to the Nations best defender, but so is the Bronko Nagurski.

There would be no issue with having an award solely for cornerbacks, since the Thorpe also includes safeties. The question is, if there were a cornerback award, shouldn’t it be named after Charles Woodson? He is the only defensive player to win the Heisman award, and he was a cornerback. Maybe the award goes to whoever comes up with the idea though, so we’ll give it to Prime.

Would Travis Hunter Deserve A Deion Sanders Prime Award?

Travis Hunter has had an amazing season, and deserves all the flowers he gets at the end of the year. He should be the unanimous Heisman winner, and anyone picking Ashton Jeanty is delusional. He will win the Paul Hornung Award (most versatile player) for the second straight season. He just isn’t the best cornerback in college football.

Unlike the Heisman, which will, and should, take into account the fact that Hunter plays both ways, the Prime Award would only care about the players performance as a cornerback. Hunter has been outstanding, with a PFF coverage grade of 88.2, which is good for seventh among qualified FBS corners. This award, however, isn’t for the seventh best corner.

Hunter has three interceptions and eight passes defended on the year. California corner Nohl Williams leads the nation with seven interceptions. He also has 11 passes defended, and seven pass breakups. He has a coverage grade of 73.0 though, so while he has the stats, he isn’t great in coverage.

Texas cornerback Jahde Barron leads the country with a pass coverage rating of 91.0. He also has eight passes defended and four interceptions. If there was an award for the nation’s best cornerback, it would go to Barron.

An award for the position is a great idea, even if it’s debatable who it should be named after, and who the inaugural award should go to.
