March is about the Bubble, Bid Stealers, and runs; it’s one of the greatest months in all of college basketball.
During conference tournament week, we always see one team that loves to knock others out of contention by stealing a bid. This aspect of March Madness is so thrilling because it gives the chance to eliminate a team that’s sitting on the bubble.
If you are a bubble team, you’re definitely cheering for the favorites during this week. When those favorites win, it opens up opportunities for you to secure a spot in the tournament, allowing you to dance on Selection Sunday instead of sweating it out.
One thing I love about March and conference tournament week is the upsets and watching top-seeded teams in smaller tournaments go down. We’ve seen it happen so many times over the years, and it’s definitely one of my favorite parts about the sport.
The only downside to these upsets is that when a top-seeded team goes down, it sometimes means we miss out on the typical March Madness upset we hope for. If that team gets knocked out, it reduces the chances of them causing havoc in the brackets.
The best part of the conference tournament is definitely the Mid-Major tournaments and the intense level of play that takes place during this time.
In these small tournaments, you witness so much emotion and high-level play, with often only one team walking away with the title and a bid. This really contrasts with the Power Five conferences, where more teams typically secure spots, regardless of who wins the tournament championship.
It makes for exciting games and truly must-see TV because many of these kids won’t get another chance to play in March Madness. When they have the opportunity to compete for a spot in the tournament, you can see a level of passion and love that you don’t often witness in other games.
This time of the year, nothing matches the level of college basketball—not even spring training baseball, golf, or other sports. It’s truly the best time of year for college basketball, and I’d even put it up against the NFL playoffs and other top sports. Nothing beats March, especially championship week and the lead-up to Selection Sunday.
If you only watch college basketball in March and skip the rest of the season, you’re really missing the special meaning of the month as a whole. Many of these teams have worked hard throughout the regular season to reach this point, leading up to Selection Sunday. College basketball is king during this time, and nothing will change my mind about that.
Championship week is the best week in all of sports. You get the pick of watching any conference anywhere on the TV dial and make up your mind which game you’ll choose. Games are on all day and night and extend all the way into the morning, making it the greatest thing in college basketball during this month.
As we inch closer to the madness, we all know that one co-worker who’ll call in sick or miss work because of this week. That’s what makes this week special—the love, passion, and aura of the thing we call madness.
Time to lock in, sit back, and relax as we prepare for the madness! Once college basketball season ends, we must wait another year to enjoy it again. As Jon Rothstein would say, “We sleep in May.” Let’s stay awake for March and April and savor the love that brings so many together.
