India ranks fourth on the Commonwealth Games’ all-time medal table, and the country’s traditional strength in combat and strength-based sports gives it a real path to another top-five finish in Glasgow. Weightlifting, judo, and boxing are all featured on this year’s leaner program. India’s roster depth in exactly those disciplines, therefore, could prove decisive in keeping the country ahead of the chasing pack.
Because Glasgow 2026 has trimmed the sports program down to just 10 disciplines and 215 total gold medals, direct comparisons to previous editions carry real limitations. Sports like badminton, hockey, and rugby sevens, all previously significant medal sources for certain nations, are absent entirely this year. That shift could disproportionately affect countries that built past medal totals around now-missing sports, while boosting others whose strengths align more closely with the trimmed program.
Scotland enters as host nation for the second time, and history suggests home advantage can meaningfully lift a country’s medal count. The Scots aren’t expected to challenge the traditional top four. A supportive home crowd across all four Glasgow venues, though, could push several close results in the host nation’s favor, particularly in cycling at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome.
