WWE has CM Punk headed back to NXT to challenge Grayson Waller for the brand’s top title during the Wednesday, Nov. 4, episode on The CW. The booking touches the brand, its champion, the network, and Punk’s own main-roster schedule. Here is a look at the timeline behind the decision.

Waller retained the title over Tony D’Angelo in the main event of NXT Halloween Havoc on Oct. 31. Danhausen, the host of the event, introduced a video message after the match. In the message, Punk issued the challenge, which WWE made official on Nov. 1.

NXT normally airs on Tuesdays, but The CW pushed the episode back a day to Wednesday, Nov. 4, to make room for election coverage on Nov. 3. John Cena is also scheduled for that episode, as announced on the Oct. 27 broadcast. Cody Rhodes is set to present the trophy to the winners of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic final on the same night.

The schedule change puts the show opposite All Elite Wrestling’s Dynamite: Blood & Guts. The two programs last went head to head on Wednesdays in 2021, before NXT moved to Tuesday nights that April. Punk, Cena, and Rhodes give the episode three former Undisputed WWE champions.

Punk won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn on the July 6 Raw at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. Kevin Owens lost a title match to Punk on the Aug. 21 SmackDown in Toronto. Zayn regained the belt on the Sept. 11 SmackDown in Mexico City after Owens struck Punk with it.

Penta later won the Money in the Bank ladder match that included Punk. Owens and Punk traded insults in a sit-down interview on the Oct. 23 SmackDown. The two meet in a No Holds Barred match on the Nov. 6 SmackDown, which tapes Nov. 2 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Crown Jewel card for Nov. 7 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has four matches, and none involves Punk.

NXT moved from USA Network to The CW in October 2024 under a five-year agreement, putting the brand on broadcast television for the first time. The CW premiere on Oct. 1, 2024, at Allstate Arena featured Punk as special guest referee for Trick Williams’ title win over Ethan Page. After the bell, Page took a GTS from Punk. Jade Cargill, Bianca Belair, and The Miz also appeared on that broadcast.

The CW added NXT premium live events in a multiyear deal announced in April 2026, starting with The Great American Bash. Halloween Havoc aired on the network in the United States and on Netflix internationally. In the April announcement, CW president Brad Schwartz credited the brand with bringing a loyal audience to the network’s Tuesday nights.

Punk teamed with Tavion Heights and Myles Borne to win a six-man tag team main event at an NXT house show on Aug. 15 in Petersburg, Virginia. Waller later posted an Instagram video of a backstage confrontation with Punk from that show. The run-in came two weeks before Waller won the title in a four-way match at Heatwave on Aug. 30.

End Of My CM Punk Rant

Sending Punk to NXT is a brilliant call, and the reasons stack up fast. Punk had no spot on the Crown Jewel card. The brand had a broadcast slot opposite Blood & Guts and needed a reason for casual fans to choose NXT over Dynamite. WWE solved both problems with one video message.

Nov. 4 is a no-lose night for Waller. A backstage run-in from August turns into a title match on broadcast television. A victory makes Waller the man who beat Punk. A loss still means a title defense against one of the biggest names in the business.

The CW gets Punk, Cena, and Rhodes on the same episode in a week with heavy competition. Punk gets a fresh title chase without stepping on the Crown Jewel card or the Owens match. Every party walks away with something. Smart booking looks exactly like this.
