Any Red Bull fan knows the name Christian Horner. For years, he has been synonymous with the team, having been the one who built it into the powerhouse that took the recent seasons by storm. On July 9, he was released from Red Bull Racing with immediate effect. Speculations began immediately, and one question seemed to appear much more frequently than any other. How will his exit affect the situation of Max Verstappen?
In January 2005, Horner was hired to lead what used to be the Jaguar F1 Team, which was by then bought out by the energy drink company, Red Bull. He was only 31 at the time, which made him the youngest team principal in Formula One. No one treated him seriously, partially because of his age, and partially because many people in the paddock had little respect for the newly emerging team. With its loud branding and even louder parties, it was seen as more of a nuisance than a serious Formula One contender.
Against all odds, in his 20 years of fulfilling the duties of team principal, Horner proved everyone wrong. He transformed the sidelined team into one that managed to win eight Constructors’ titles and eight Drivers’ Championships.
That is not to say that Horner’s time at Red Bull wasn’t without its controversies. While many racing fans will point to the last race of the 2021 season as the most controversial moment, there was a much darker streak in his F1 history. Almost a year and a half ago, the team principal was accused of sexual harassment and coercive behavior towards a female employee. Horner was cleared of the claims, but with a public Google Drive filled with screenshots of his alleged conversations with the employee, many people believed the ruling to be wrong. He has, in the big part, lost the respect of the racing community.
Finally, after 20 years in his role, Horner has been fired with immediate effect. He took to Instagram to write that it had been a privilege to lead the team and that he is proud of what they had managed to achieve. No further details about his sudden departure were provided.
For months now, rumors about Verstappen have circulated the paddock. Long before the 2025 season began, people speculated that he’d be leaving Mercedes and joining Red Bull. Toto Wolff, Mercedes’ team principal, didn’t hide his desire to sign the World Champion. After Horner’s controversy and Adrian Newey’s departure from Red Bull, it seemed like a matter of time before Verstappen jumped ship.
The rumors were put to rest after Kimi Antonelli was signed alongside George Russell, filling the second Mercedes seat. But they didn’t stay buried for long. They returned after the first few races of the season, fueled by Red Bull’s poor performance and the general disarray inside the team. Verstappen’s contract binds him to the team until 2028, but many people believe that it includes an exit clause that will let him leave if his performance is not up to par.
Horner’s firing could tip the scales in either direction. On one hand, it could have been a last-ditch effort to keep the Dutchman in the team, given that the Verstappen camp didn’t seem to be getting along well with the team principal. On the other hand, it might signal the beginning of the end of Red Bull, giving the World Champion the perfect opportunity to try his luck at a different team.
It’s hard to predict Verstappen’s future, but usually, where there’s smoke, there’s fire. The Mercedes rumors have been around for too long to be baseless, so there is a big chance that a second big announcement is coming in the next few days. When it comes to Horner, his story in Red Bull might be over, but that doesn’t mean that so is his story in Formula One. With his immense experience and expertise, he is a man of interest to many teams.
