Chelsea Green holds the interim WWE Women’s Championship, and almost every piece of the setup points toward a placeholder reign. The belt looks destined for Rhea Ripley or Tiffany Stratton before the year is out.
Ripley tore her meniscus against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy on May 31 and has not wrestled since a June 3 house show in Europe. WWE ruled her out of SummerSlam on July 17 and chose to crown an interim champion rather than vacate the title, a first for the main roster.
Green climbed the ladder past Charlotte Flair, Cargill, Stratton, and Lash Legend on August 2 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The announced framing had the interim champion meeting Ripley on her return to settle which reign counts.
The word “interim” vanished almost immediately. Joe Tessitore introduced Green on the August 7 SmackDown as the Women’s Champion with no qualifier. The shirt she wore that night read “Permanent Champion.” Nobody from WWE has confirmed that the label actually changed.
Ripley underwent surgery on the knee, the first operation of a career approaching 14 years, and no return date has been announced. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that WWE hopes to have her back by the Royal Rumble. A January return would leave Green carrying an interim belt for another four months.
Booking since Minneapolis has not treated the champion like somebody built for that stretch. Green broke her orbital bone during her first match as champion, and SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis handed her 30 days to get cleared. Fallon Henley pinned her in that same match.
Nia Jax and Lash Legend jumped Green and Stratton after the bell, and Jax closed the segment standing over both women with the title in hand. A champion booked that way in week one is rarely the long-term plan.
WWE has run this pattern before. Interim and placeholder titles exist to keep a division moving while the real champion heals, and the wrestler holding the spot almost never keeps it once the situation resolves. Nothing in the SmackDown booking has broken from that template.
Stratton already held the WWE Women’s Championship once and currently carries the Women’s United States Championship. The alliance with Green formed the same week the interim title did, and allies turning into challengers is the shortest story WWE runs.
Bryan Alvarez has also noted rumblings that Ripley could end up vacating the championship outright. Vacating removes the unification match entirely and leaves Green needing a first credible defense against somebody with a real claim. Stratton is the only woman on SmackDown who checks that box without a tournament.
Charlotte Flair, Jade Cargill, and Lash Legend all have arguments of their own. None of them has been standing next to Green every week since Minneapolis, and none of them carries a prior WWE Women’s Championship reign the way Stratton does. Proximity matters more than resume in a story like this one.
Green herself has no idea which version is coming. Asked on Complex Graps whether WWE had explained the plan, she said “I don’t have any idea what’s happening tomorrow.” Nobody told the champion how her own reign resolves.
Transitional does not have to mean disposable. Green earned the loudest reaction of the SummerSlam weekend, and 13 years of work went into that ladder climb. A short reign that ends with a great match against Ripley or Stratton is still a career-defining run. Plenty of placeholder champions have gotten far less.
The waste would be letting the reign drift. Four months of interim status, orbital fractures, and post-match beatdowns turn a feel-good moment into a holding pattern. WWE should pick the endpoint now, build the match, and give Green a finish worth the wait.
