Charlotte FC might be getting the help it desperately needed after a significant fall from the top at the start of the season. The team started the season near the top of the Eastern Conference rankings, but a five-match losing streak coupled with a negative goal differential pushed the team far down the list. Part of those problems can be blamed on injuries and players going on international duty. Charlotte now seems to be on the upswing with a new lineup, just in time for the second half of the season.

The Problems Started With Byrne

The team seemed to start falling apart around May after defender Nathan Byrne was forced off the team because of a neck injury. The senior player has remained on the right side of the back line since joining the team in 2022. He was part of the best defense in the league in 2024 and helped goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina record several clean sheets, ultimately contributing to Kahlina’s win of the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award.

Byrne’s absence has been noticeable, particularly as the team struggles to assemble a solid backline. Charlotte even went as far as to bench Kahlina in hopes of finding a new dynamic that would help the team succeed. After recording a total of 11 losses, team managers appear to be using a mix of veterans, such as Tim Ream and Adilson Malanda, alongside players who haven’t seen much playing time, like Bill Tuiloma. The new blend appears to be setting the team up for success, which will be further enhanced when Byrne returns during the Leagues Cup.

Goodbye Top Goal Scorer, Hello New Talent

Changes to the backline weren’t the only problems the Queen City team has faced this season. Uncertainty surrounding the future of the team’s forwards has also been a cause for concern. Star forward Patrick Agyemang was absent from several games over the summer after being called up with defender Tim Ream to play with the U.S. Men’s National Team. His last matchday with the crown was in June, after rumors during his time with the USMNT that he would likely be transferred to Derby County proved to be true. The frontline seemed to flounder with that news, resulting in a drop in Charlotte’s goal differential to the negatives.

While many fans believed the team’s future would only unfold in the summer transfer window, it seems that one young player on the team was ready to shine. Forward Idan Toklomati has proved himself to be a real asset to the team over the past several weeks. The 20-year-old first joined the club in 2024 and recorded only 17 minutes of playing time that season. This year, he has started in only 10 matches, but has been responsible for six goals and two assists. That’s the same number of goals that Agyemang recorded in the 16 games he played this season.

While it seems that Charlotte could be on the upswing, fans are still looking toward potential transfers that could help the team become a solid playoff contender. The team is currently rumored to be on the hunt for strikers to replace Agyemang, and possibly provide backup to Toklomati. Some names that have been suggested include Jamie Vardy, who Charlotte showed interest in earlier this year.

Pushing The Team Toward The Leagues Cup

Nothing makes a team want to keep pushing than a streak of wins behind them. Charlotte’s momentum isn’t just pushing them through the next half of the season; it’s taking them into the Leagues Cup. The cup championship started in 2023, and the team is looking to add a trophy to their home inside Bank of America Stadium. Charlotte will begin this year’s group stage by facing off against FC Juárez, followed by games against Guadalajara and Monterrey. This will also test the team, which is a concern for some MLS fans. That’s because both MLS and LIGA MX regular season play will continue through the cup matches.

End Of My Charlotte FC Rant

No matter what sport, it seems that professional leagues based out of Charlotte have special ways of testing who the true fans are. The MLS season is only halfway through, but Charlotte has already taken fans on a rollercoaster ride, from the highest highs to the lowest lows. While the way forward may feel uncertain, it’s not all bad news. Byrne will be returning to the backline, which will make the defense more secure. The team currently has a solid forward, so all that is needed in this transfer window is some bench depth. If the team can keep its streak alive and continue scoring goals, there’s no reason it can’t make it into the playoffs.
