Barcelona is one of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, so perhaps not surprisingly, they have had some great players. Some of the best soccer players in the world have played for Barcelona FC.
These are some of the great players who have starred for the Catalonian giants.
Maradona was one of the great players of his era, and he starred for the Argentina national team and Barcelona. Maradona played either as an attacking midfielder or a second striker, and his goal against England in the 1986 World Cup was perhaps one of the best scored in the World Cup. Although Maradona only had a couple of seasons at the Nou Camp, he still flourished in a Barcelona team for which he scored 22 goals. In 1983, Maradona won both the La Liga title and the Copa Del Rey.
Cruyff inspired the Dutch Total Football team to the 1974 FIFA World Cup final. He is also a legend at the Barcelona soccer club, both as a player and a manager. As a player, Cruyff was a great player during the 1970s, and in 1974, he won the La Liga title with them, which was their first in more than a decade. He played over 100 games for Barça as a player and won many trophies for the club as manager. His dream team dominated La Liga and won Barcelona’s first European Cup in the early 1990s.
One of the outstanding soccer players of Cruyff’s Barça dream team of the early 1990s was Stoichkov. The Bulgarian international not only inspired Bulgaria to the 1994 World Cup semi-finals as the World Cup’s top goal-scoring player but also led the line for Barcelona alongside Romario. Stoichkov was a great striker who scored 110 goals for Barça during his playing career, which helped the team win five La Liga titles, the Cup Winners Cup, and the European Cup in 1992. Stoichkov was a Barcelona idol and returned to the club later in the ‘90s to win further trophies with them.
What can be said about Messi that hasn’t already been said? Messi is a Barcelona legend who played a record number of matches for the Catalan giant. He set a new Barça scoring record by scoring 672 goals for the club from 2004 to 2021. Messi has been awarded FIFA World Player of the Year eight times, most recently in 2023, after inspiring Argentina to FIFA World Cup glory. This player won 10 league titles, four Champions League titles, and several Spanish cups when playing for Barcelona, which is an impressive trophy haul.
Xavi (Xavier Hernández) played 767 matches for Barcelona, the second-highest number of games after Messi. He won many trophies with the team, including four Champions League triumphs. Xavi also played more than 100 games for Spain in the midfield, winning the FIFA World Cup with them in 2010, and was influential in their 2008 European Championship triumph. Xavi won the World Soccer Player of the Year and Spanish La Liga Player of the Year awards as one of the best soccer playmakers in the game.
Those great Barcelona players dazzled the fans at the Nou Camp and won trophies galore for the Catalan giants. This list could be much longer than it is, but Messi, Xavi, Maradona, Cruyff, and Stoichkov are five of the most outstanding Barcelona players in history.
