Keenum’s performance mattered because the Bears did not ask the veteran quarterback to carry the entire offense. Chicago established the running game, leaned on short-to-intermediate completions, and waited for opportunities to attack Philadelphia vertically. Keenum finished with 247 passing yards without throwing an interception. The veteran’s ball security and efficiency allowed the Bears’ defense and running game to control the overall game script.
Chicago’s opening possession provided an early example of that approach. The Bears marched 66 yards on 11 plays during its opening possession. Keenum completed five of his first six passes for 45 yards before Luther Burden III finished the drive with an eight-yard touchdown reception. The possession forced the Eagles to defend a methodical Chicago offense rather than simply load up against the run.
Burden’s touchdown demonstrated how the Bears could create an early advantage without asking Keenum to make difficult throws on every possession. Chicago used motion and quick decisions to create manageable throws before Burden finished the drive in the end zone. Raymond’s touchdown gave the Chicago an explosive answer after Santos’ field goal and put the Eagles in a much more difficult position for the rest of the game.
Keenum then capped a 13-play, 58-yard fourth-quarter drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown. The score pushed the margin to 27–7 and completed a performance built around protecting the football, sustaining drives, and capitalizing when the Eagles made mistakes. The Bears never needed Keenum to throw at a high volume because the offense continued to create manageable situations.
Chicago’s defense prevented Philadelphia from turning the game into a high-volume passing contest for Keenum. The Bears limited the Eagles to 248 total yards, forced three turnovers, and held Philadelphia scoreless throughout the second half after allowing only seven points before halftime. The Eagles’ three turnovers proved especially important. Dillon Thieneman intercepted Andy Dalton in the red zone while T.J. Edwards later picked off Jalen Hurts, and Philadelphia also lost a fumble during the game. Chicago converted five of 13 third downs, while Philadelphia managed only two conversions on nine attempts, leaving the Eagles repeatedly facing difficult situations. The Bears’ defense therefore limited Philadelphia’s ability to extend drives even when the Eagles moved the ball successfully in isolated stretches.
Chicago led only 10–7 at halftime, making the second half the clearest evidence that the Bears were doing more than simply surviving with Keenum. Cairo Santos opened the third quarter with a 48-yard field goal before Keenum connected with Raymond for the 41-yard touchdown that changed the complexion of the game. Philadelphia never answered with a scoring drive after halftime.
The Eagles went three-and-out on three consecutive second-half possessions, while Edwards’ interception of Hurts came after Philadelphia reached Chicago’s territory. The defensive execution allowed the Bears to maintain control without forcing Keenum into unnecessary high-risk throws, creating the type of game environment that suited the veteran quarterback. Chicago’s 128 rushing yards also helped sustain that approach by keeping the offense balanced and reducing the need for constant passing.
The fourth-quarter touchdown drive then turned a 20–7 advantage into the final 27–7 margin. the Bears converted the Eagles’ penalties into additional opportunities before Keenum finished the possession with his quarterback sneak. Chicago closed out a 20-point victory without allowing Philadelphia to mount a second-half comeback.
Keenum’s performance gives the Bears something valuable without changing the team’s long-term quarterback hierarchy. Williams remains the Chicago’s starting quarterback, and one strong performance from Keenum does not alter that status unless the team announces otherwise. The immediate value of Keenum’s performance is showing that the Bears can execute their offense with an experienced veteran while Williams recovers.
The timing matters because Chicago entered the game after scoring only three points against the Minnesota Vikings. Keenum responded against an Eagles team that entered Week 3 at 2–0. The veteran produced 247 passing yards and three total touchdowns while avoiding the turnovers that can quickly derail an offense led by a replacement quarterback. The Bears also demonstrated that 128 rushing yards and three takeaways can reduce the amount of pressure placed on a replacement quarterback.
The performance does not prove that Chicago can reproduce the same offensive efficiency every week without Williams. Keenum showed that the Bears can function effectively with a veteran quarterback when the offense stays balanced, the defense creates favorable situations, and the quarterback avoids giving possessions away. Sustainability remains the larger question for Chicago if Williams misses additional time.
Keenum also brought considerably more experience than his emergency role might suggest. The veteran entered the season with 66 career starts and 15,175 passing yards. Bears offensive coordinator Press Taylor expressed confidence in Keenum’s readiness during the team’s pre-game coverage, saying, “I don’t think anybody has any doubt he’ll be ready for the moment. Monday night showed that Keenum was prepared for the opportunity, with the veteran delivering three total touchdowns after more than two years without a regular season start.
