We’re just days away from the start of the NFL season. Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars are set to take on the Cleveland Browns in their home opener.

Coming off a 13-win season and an AFC South division title, not many people are buying into the Jaguars this season. Head coach Liam Coen is not focused on the outside noise. He has established a mantra for the team: “Anyone. Anytime. Anywhere. Sustain Success.” No player embodies that theme more than quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Building on a Breakthrough Year

Labeled a generational talent since his freshman year at Cartersville High School, Trevor Lawrence has had an up-and-down start to his NFL career. Consistency, however, has been his biggest issue. 

In his second season, Lawrence had the best season of his career to that point under head coach Doug Pederson, throwing for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, helping lead the Jaguars to an AFC South crown and a second-round playoff berth, while also earning a Pro Bowl vote.

Heading into the 2023 season, Lawrence was viewed as a top-10 quarterback and faced high expectations. Jacksonville started 8-3 that year before completely collapsing, losing five of its last six games and missing the playoffs.

Lawrence finished the season completing 65% of his passes, throwing for 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. In the offseason, he was rewarded with a five-year, $275 million contract, making him the highest-paid quarterback.

Following a disappointing 2023 campaign, Lawrence entered his fourth season looking to regain the success of his second year; instead, his season ended abruptly. Jacksonville finished the year 4-13.

Lawrence missed the entire second half of the season after a brutal concussion in Week 13.  He finished the season with a 60% completion rate, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

After the 2024 season, the Jaguars fired head coach Doug Pederson and hired former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen. Under Coen, Lawrence flourished, having the best season of his career.

He finished in the top five in MVP voting while completing 60.9% of his passes for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and adding nine rushing touchdowns.

Carrying Success Into 2026

Ironically, Lawrence’s best season was also the best season the Jaguars have had since 1999. Jacksonville finished with 13 wins, an AFC South title and the NFL’s 11th-ranked total offense.

From  Week 10 through the end of the season, Jacksonville’s offense came alive; Lawrence passed for 2,009 yards, 19 touchdowns and five interceptions, while adding five rushing touchdowns over that stretch.

Now, in 2026, Lawrence is being viewed as a borderline top-10 quarterback. Will history repeat itself, or will Lawrence build on his 2025 campaign and help lead Jacksonville to back-to-back playoff appearances, something the franchise has not accomplished since 1998 and 1999?

Lawrence enters 2026 with a solid receiving corps around him. Brian Thomas Jr., who had an exceptional 2024 rookie season with 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, came on late down the stretch last season. An emerging Parker Washington, who recorded the best season of his career, leading the team with 847 receiving yards and 58 receptions.

Jakobi Meyers, who was required via trade, quickly became a security blanket for Lawrence before agreeing to a long-term deal in Jacksonville. Also, a fully healthy Travis Hunter, who showed flashes during his rookie season, along with the same offensive staff that helped him excel last year.

End Of My Trevor Lawrence Rant

Moving forward, I believe Lawrence’s 2025 season was no fluke. He has unlocked Lawrence, and this is the quarterback we all hoped to see when he was selected first overall out of Clemson.

For Coen, this is no one-off. He has helped multiple quarterbacks turn their careers around and produce great seasons.

This dates back to Baker Mayfield in 2024, when he served as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator. Mayfield passed for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns at 71% completion, making it the best season of his career thus far. Looking back at Coen’s time at Kentucky as the offensive coordinator in 2021, he helped quarterback Will Levis have his most productive season, passing for 2,827 yards, 24 passing touchdowns, and nine rushing touchdowns.
