Chicago Bears superstar quarterback Caleb Williams refuses to buy into the modern pro athlete mentality that everyone should be best friends. Instead, he has chosen to channel his inner black mamba. Kobe Bryant was friends with no one on the court. It was not enough to beat his opponents, he wanted to destroy and humiliate them. He may have smiled at tipoff, but only to hide the venomous fangs waiting eagerly to strike and kill.
In an interview with Esquire Magazine, Williams addresses the fondness for opponents in today’s game and how he is refusing to take part in it going forward. “I think the NFL has become very friendly, and I don’t necessarily want to be friends, because I want to keep that competitive advantage,” he said during the interview.

No Banana Boat For Caleb Williams

In the summer of 2018, a photograph that is now infamous surfaced of LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade riding an inflatable banana boat while on vacation together. It has become a symbol of the “friendship mentality” in the NBA, as the three players finished the 2017-18 season on different teams, but still referred to themselves as “the brotherhood”. Carmelo Anthony also joined them on this vacation, but there wasn’t enough room on the boat for him.
In the 80s, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird respected each other, but were not friends on or off the court. Players’ competitiveness was fueled by hatred. Bird hated Bill Laimbeer, Gary Payton hated John Stockton, and Michael Jordan hated everybody. Jordan was vindictive and even threatened not to play on the 1992 Olympic Basketball Team if Isaiah Thomas was on it. Bryant followed in his footsteps, and for 48 minutes every night, viewed every player not in a Lakers jersey as his mortal enemy.
Caleb Williams is planning to carry on that mentality against opposing quarterbacks in 2025. Though they never directly play against each other, an unspoken brotherhood of sorts exists between those who play the position. They have a lot in common after all. They all share the same responsibilities, and all avoid defenders trying to take them out. Williams isn’t saying he won’t have respect for his competitors, but like Kobe, he plans to step on their throats if he gets the chance.
End Of My Caleb Williams Rant
Williams could be overcompensating in the media for the perceived notion that he is soft. He was criticized in college for crying after a 52-42 loss to Washington in 2023. He was brutalized on social media for admitting he cried after some losses in 2025, and people continue to mock him for painting his nails. It’s not outside the realm of possibility that he is talking tough now to offset some of that outside noise.
It will be interesting to see if Williams can follow through. LeBron James announced to the world he was going to play the role of villain after The Decision, but the heel turn didn’t last, as minutes into his first season with the Heat, he went back into “everybody please like me” mode. Williams has an insane amount of talent. His creativity and ability to throw from the pocket or on the run may be second to no other quarterback in the league. If he is serious about sustaining a killer mentality, the Mamba Mentality, Ben Johnson will be exceptionally happy. The rest of the league, however, will be the ones crying after games.
