Quarterback Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were on the road to challenge the Los Angeles Rams for Week 12 of NFL Sunday Night Football. The visitors have been dealing with numerous injuries, which remained the biggest question going into this game. It was clear early that the turnover was too deep to keep up with how well quarterback Matthew Stafford and his team are playing. Down 14-0 after the first quarter, they lost much more than the game by halftime.
Down 31-7 as the first half was coming to an end, Mayfield was doing his best to make a play. After showing discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder earlier, he fell to the ground in pain after launching a Hail Mary. Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater finished the game from there.
Mayfield was seen on Instagram before the end of the game in a sling. After the game, On3 reports on Buccaneers’ head coach Todd Bowles’ initial report. A sprained shoulder has been diagnosed, and he will undergo an MRI on Monday. This is not promising news, at least in the short term, for the scrappy Tampa Bay team.
Fantasy owners may be scrambling for a replacement. The obvious answer is to grab Bridgewater off the waiver wire, currently rostered in only 3% of Sleeper leagues. It’s tough pickings from there. Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback Mason Rudolph has 27.2% ownership, but owners would be wise to monitor Aaron Rodgers’ injury. Fans could also take a shot at New York Jets’ quarterback Tyrod Taylor, who should offer a predictable floor for most of the season. Talor has seen an 18% increase in ownership, but is still available in 49% of leagues.
Fans of Mayfield and the Buccaneers are eager for the MRI results. The team is still in a good spot to win the NFC South, but they are in for their steepest test in years. They have the same record as the Carolina Panthers at 6-5, with the Atlanta Falcons only two games back of the mark.
