Bruno Guimarães Arsenal debut gave supporters their first opportunity to see the new midfielder in action.
Guimarães made his Arsenal debut on Wednesday. He came on at half-time in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Como after just three training sessions with his new teammates.
Speaking afterward, Mikel Arteta praised the midfielder’s readiness and eagerness to play. More strikingly, Arteta said he could already sense a strong connection forming that would make the team better.
Arsenal won the match 4-3 on penalties following the draw, in what was the club’s final pre-season fixture before the Community Shield against Manchester City.
Arsenal’s pre-season campaign came to a close with a mixed but eventful display against Como. Myles Lewis-Skelly put the hosts ahead, before Como’s Martin Baturina levelled the scoreline before half-time.
The second half saw Arteta make wholesale changes, using the game to get minutes into players who’d seen less action over the summer. This included Guimarães’ half-time introduction.
The scoreline remained unchanged after 90 minutes, so the match went to a penalty shootout. Arsenal won 4-3 to close out their pre-season schedule with a positive result heading into the Community Shield.
Arteta’s assessment covered three things: Guimarães’ limited preparation, his attitude, and how quickly he fit into the team. On preparation, Arteta noted Guimarães had only trained with the squad three times before playing. On attitude, Arteta said the midfielder had been eager to make his debut and experience playing in front of Arsenal’s fans.
Arteta went further than simple praise, telling reporters he could already sense “a strong connection at play that is going to make us better.”
Arteta’s last point is the real story here. It’s one thing for a manager to be pleased with a new signing’s effort in a 45-minute pre-season cameo. It’s another for him to say, this early, that he can already feel a tactical fit.
This is where interpretation comes in, rather than anything Arteta said directly. It reads less like Arteta praising Guimarães’ attitude and more like him describing a tactical aspect.
Arteta’s comments provide a sense that the midfielder’s instincts on the ball already suit how Arsenal want to play. That’s a notable observation after so little time on the training pitch, and it offers an early indication of why Guimarães’ profile could suit what Arteta wants from his midfield.
It’s also worth noting that Guimarães’ debut came alongside separate comments from Arteta. He confirmed Arsenal is still “actively” looking to strengthen the squad before the transfer window closes. It’s a reminder that his arrival hasn’t necessarily closed the door on further business.

Guimarães’ introduction wasn’t just a case of one player replacing another. It gave a glimpse of a midfield combination Arsenal fans may see a lot more of. He came on alongside Martin Ødegaard and Myles Lewis-Skelly, forming a midfield three with a notably fluid structure.
Guimarães was generally the deepest of the three, but calling him a straightforward defensive midfielder undersold what Arteta appeared to be testing.
Positions shifted around Guimarães. Lewis-Skelly pushed higher up the pitch at times, and Ødegaard drifted into pockets of space to influence possession. Guimarães offered something Arsenal’s midfield hasn’t consistently had: a player comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and immediately turning it forward.
The trio’s fluid setup was picked up on social media. At least one tactical-focused account described it as resembling a position-less midfield three, drawing comparisons to the structure Paris Saint-Germain has used in recent seasons.
It’s too early to say Guimarães has transformed anything after half a game of pre-season football. His debut, though, offered a glimpse of the qualities Arsenal signed him for: ball progression from deep, resistance to the press.
Guimarães also showed physical presence in midfield battles and a wide passing range. These are exactly the attributes Arsenal have been assembling their midfield around under Arteta.
