Those numbers would go on to earn him his first-ever Silver Slugger Award. It was a positive and huge year for the Cuban outfielder. He was finally able to show, when healthy, that he is amongst the best in all of baseball.
The 2024 MLB season was a terrible year not only for Robert Jr.’s standards but also for the franchise of the Chicago White Sox. He would slash .224/.278/.379, only hit 14 home runs, with 34 RBIs. The White Sox would only win 41 games, putting together one of the worst seasons in MLB history. Due to the White Sox’s struggles, teams started to show interest in trading for the star outfielder, but the organization would hold on to its best player.
The off-season is when the rumors started to pick up more, as the Dodgers, Reds, and Phillies showed interest in the White Sox player. The White Sox’s general manager, Chris Getz, had trade talks to send Robert Jr. to the Cincinnati Reds, but negotiations would eventually fall apart. Robert Jr. would start the 2025 season in a White Sox uniform, but the latest rumors have said the New York Mets are the latest team to be interested in the center fielder.
The New York Mets have been in search of an everyday center fielder ever since they moved Carlos Beltran to right field and ultimately traded him to the San Francisco Giants in 2011. Juan Lagares was the one bright spot at one point, but his bat never came around and was eventually replaced. Brandon Nimmo was another option the Mets tried out at center, and he was decent, improving each year, until last season he was named the team’s starting left fielder.
The center field position has been one of the biggest needs the Mets would like to address, and Luis Robert Jr. can be the solution. He is one of the best defensive players in the league, and there’s no denying the talent he has.
