Brandon Aiyuk has become one of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason.
Less than two years after signing a massive contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, the former All-Pro receiver finds himself in an unprecedented standoff with the organization. Public criticism of general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan, repeated social media posts involving the Washington Commanders and his continued absence from the team have left his future in doubt.
As training camp approaches, Aiyuk remains on the Reserve/Left Squad list. He has also publicly stated that he has not filed for reinstatement, preventing any immediate resolution while fueling daily speculation about whether he will ever play another snap for San Francisco.

The current situation began after months of tension between Aiyuk and the organization.
After recovering from a serious knee injury, the relationship deteriorated over contractual and organizational disputes. The 49ers eventually placed Aiyuk on the Reserve/Left Squad list after he stopped reporting to the facility.
Being on that list means he is not part of the active roster and cannot simply return to the field without completing the reinstatement process.
Until that happens, every discussion about his future remains hypothetical.
Aiyuk signed a four-year, $120 million extension before the 2024 season. The original deal included $76 million in total guarantees and carried an average annual value of $30 million.
The situation has changed dramatically since then.
San Francisco voided $27 million in guaranteed money for 2026 after determining Aiyuk had not fulfilled requirements tied to his contract. That decision gave the 49ers considerably more flexibility to eventually move on from him.
Aiyuk remains under contract, but while he stays on the Reserve/Left Squad list, he does not count against the active roster or salary cap. According to the Associated Press, he also is not owed additional money unless he reports to the team.
That creates one of the strangest stalemates in the NFL.
Aiyuk wants out, but San Francisco has little incentive to release him for nothing. The 49ers can remain patient while waiting to see whether Aiyuk files for reinstatement or another team makes an acceptable trade offer.
The Washington Commanders have consistently been mentioned because of Aiyuk’s connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels.
The two played together at Arizona State, making Washington an obvious destination whenever speculation begins.
Earlier this offseason, Aiyuk even suggested he would sign with the Commanders immediately if released.
Since then, however, the situation has become far more complicated.
Adam Schefter recently reported that some around the league believe Aiyuk’s public conduct has cooled trade interest rather than increased it. Teams may be hesitant to invest significant draft capital and salary in a player whose relationship with his current club has become so public.
At the moment, trade rumors remain exactly that—rumors.

Lynch addressed Brandon Aiyuk’s future after the 2025 season and made the organization’s position unusually clear.
“I think it’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the Niners,” Lynch told reporters in January.
That statement represented a significant shift in the Aiyuk saga.
The question is no longer whether San Francisco expects Aiyuk to return and reclaim his place in the offense. It’s how and when the two sides will finally separate.
Aiyuk hasn’t played since suffering a season-ending knee injury against the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 20, 2024. He missed the entire 2025 season before the 49ers placed him on the Reserve/Left Squad list in December.
The relationship has only deteriorated since then.
